Robert "Doc" Adelman
7/15-52 – 3/28/24
Robert "Doc" Adelman, a man of great valor and cheerful generosity, passed away peacefully in
Lisle, IL, on March 24, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on July 15, 1952, in
Highwood, IL, Doc's zest for life and capacity for kindness marked the lives of all who knew him. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, particularly his beloved wife Pamela Dorneden (Sackrider), his dear sister Karen (David) Perry, his cherished niece Corrine (Brian) Manny, and his treasured nephew Benjamin (Brittany) Perry. Doc was great uncle to two nieces and one nephew.
Doc's academic pursuits began in the corridors of Wauconda Elementary School and continued to the esteemed halls of Lake Forest Academy. His passion for debate and governance led him to study political science at Tarkio College in Missouri, followed by legal studies at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. It was there that Doc's keen sense of justice and advocacy was finely honed. A man of multifaceted talents and interests, Doc was known for reaching the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout in his youth, laying the foundation for a lifetime of leadership and service. "Be Prepared" was his daily mantra.
His dedication to the snow-capped slopes led him to serve as president of the Sitzmark Ski Club in Chicago for two terms in the 1980s. His love for winter sports transcended his own pursuits, as he became a Board member of the US Ski Team and played a pivotal role in bringing the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City.
Beyond the peaks, Doc plunged into the depths of the ocean as a scuba diving instructor, sharing his passion for the underwater world with countless individuals. His bravery and commitment to helping others were unmistakably evidenced when he stepped forward as a first responder, offering his assistance during the devastating hurricane that struck Guanaja, Honduras on October 27, 1998. For two weeks, he devoted himself to rescue and recovery operations, exemplifying what it means to be courageous. His fervor for life was not just limited to his own exploits. Doc's tenure as a law enforcement safety training officer reflects his commitment to the well-being of others, ensuring that those who protect and serve are well-prepared for any challenge they might face. He was an active volunteer member of the Illinois Tactical Officers Association. He received their Outstanding Service Award on Nov 20, 2023. Doc's interests were as broad as his heart: auto racing, photography, snow skiing, scuba diving, and sporting clays. In each of these arenas, he not only participated but often led and mentored others with a kind spirit and a generous attitude.
It was said that Doc lived by the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." And find himself he did-through every life he touched, every adventure he embarked upon, and every obstacle he overcame. Robert "Doc" Adelman will be remembered as a beacon of kindness, a man who gave generously of himself, and a figure of unwavering courage. His legacy is one of love and selflessness, inspiring all who knew him to strive for greatness not in stature, but in character.
The sun has set on a life so vibrantly lived, yet the warmth of Doc's spirit remains, a comforting presence in the memories of his family, friends, and the countless lives he enriched. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the exemplary life he led and the indelible impressions he made upon this world. Rest in peace, Doc. Your story is one of triumph, generosity, and unyielding courage, and it will be recounted with admiration for generations to come. As he often said, "Don't cry for me as I have lived twice".
