Frederick W. "Ted" Brooke III, age 93, of Evanston, died Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at his residence. Devoted son of the late Frederick W. Brooke Jr. and Marjorie A. Carr, he was a 4th-generation Chicagoan, born September 8, 1931.
Beloved husband of the late Janet, née Carlsen; loving father of Frederick W. "Ted" (Sara) Brooke IV; dear grandfather of Jackson (Natalie Chapman), Walker, and Isabel.
Ted graduated from Lake Forest Academy and matriculated to Northwestern University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. After graduation, he began an MBA at Northwestern but withdrew to attend the United States Navy's Officer Candidate School. He rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and served in the Mediterranean and Pacific, including time on the USS Coral Sea.
In 1953, Ted attended a dance where he met a nursing student named Janet (who only attended the dance because her friends told her that men from the Navy would be in attendance). They were married a short time later.
After leaving the Navy, Ted started a career in banking at Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, working as a real estate lending officer. In the early 1970s, he began traveling globally for the bank. His time included postings in Sydney, Australia (1975-78) and in Manila, The Philippines (1979-82). Upon returning to the US, he and Janet enjoyed living on Michigan Avenue in the John Hancock Center.
In retirement Ted volunteered at nearby Northwestern Medicine.
Ted and Janet moved to the Presbyterian Home in 2001. They delighted in making new friends and participating in the many activities offered there. Ted kept residents amused over the years with his dry sense of humor and was known for warmly welcoming newcomers.
Services are private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Field Museum, 75 Remittance Dr., Suite 1093, Chicago, IL, 60675 (fieldmuseum.org).
