Robert Morris Andrews passed away on November 1, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mazelle Andrews; his parents, Roscoe and Georgia Andrews; brother, Howard; and sister, Monteen.
Morris is survived by his daughter, Robin Mercer; son, Dean Andrews; grandchildren, Nathaniel Mercer, Megan Mercer, Brooke Andrews, Steven Dove and Morgan Dove; son-in-law, Albert; and daughter-in-law, Connie.
Robert Morris Andrews was born in Carnesville, GA on September 2, 1931. Except for military service he lived in Royston and worked in Lavonia, a proud citizen of Franklin County.
Mr. Andrews served in the 14th infantry division, United States Army, as a combat infantry soldier during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. God spared his life one brutal day in North Korea when he left a bunker to get a pencil to write his mother. At that moment a shell hit the bunker where he had been, killing the man who had been next to him.
Mr. Andrews was a long-time member of Jones Chapel where he and Mazelle centered their family and service life. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Administrative Board, was active in United Methodist Men, participated in Walk to Emmaus and Disciple Bible Study.
His work career included managing his own lending service, Lavonia Finance Company.
He was a long-time member and past President of the Royston-Franklin Springs Lions Club.
An exceptional driver, cars and driving were his hobby, something he shared with Dean. He and Robin shared Braves baseball and Georgia football. He loved animals, particularly an English bulldog, Harley.
He led a life of quiet humility serving church, family, community and country. Upon hearing of Morris' passing a close friend of the family, Tim Revis, wrote, "The dignity and self-discipline with which men like Mr. Andrews led their lives- it is so enviable. They were a breed apart. I don't think they exist anymore. He really is the last one. The loss is keen."
Special thanks go to those who helped to care for Morris: Ms. Sharon Leverette, Dr. David Harris and his team, Dr. Jeffrey Thomas, Meredith Staton and Gwynn Pickens; Drs. Paul Henkel and Jonathan Payne, orthopedic surgeons and the compassionate staff of Piedmont Hospital Athens who cared for him during his last illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Andrews will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November12, 2022, in the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Pruitt Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening. During other times the family will be at their respective homes.
In lieu of flowers; please consider a contribution to Jones Chapel United Methodist Church c/o Elena Hart at 4831 Hwy 174, Danielsville, GA 30633.
