Robert Barnes

Robert, 90 years old was born on August 21, 1935 in Salem. He passed away at October 15, 2025 at his home.

Bob, born to Carl J and Blanche(Fry) Barnes in Salem, Oregon. In his early years he spent some time in Prineville and Portland ending up in Salem by his third grade. He graduated from Salem High School in 1953 having played Football and receiving an appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Maryland, which he was not allowed to attend due to a football injury. He went to OSU for 2 years and transferred to Oregon College of Education finishing his Bachelors Degree in Education in 1957.

Bob met Irene Asburry in a dance class at OCE in 1955. They were married on Augusts 11, 1957 and were married 68 years. and they settled in Hillsboro in 1967. They had three children, Douglas, Donovan, and David.

Bob was a teacher for one/third of his life. He taught math at Glide High School, Monroe High School, Creswell High School, Beaverton High School, Sunset High School and Aloha High School, where he was the Chairman of the Math Department for 22 years.He also finished a Masters of Education Degree in 1967 at the University of Oregon and had spent 1962-63 at The Ohio State University under a National Science Foundation Grant. After retiring in 1990 he went to OSU and finished a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.

In 1960 Bob and Irene joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent many years in leadership and worked at the temple for 13 years. He was the Bishop of the Hillsboro Ward, Bishop of the Brookwood Ward, in the Stake Presidency for 8 years and retired as a Patriarch.

He is preceded in death by his son, Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene, Two sons, Donovan and Michelle Barnes of Prineville, OR, David Barnes and Amanda of Hillsboro, a daughter in law Tamera Barnes of Centervlle, Utah, this brother Dan and Vi of Redmond Or. Seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Burial was Oct 24 2025 at City View Cemetery in Salem, Oregon.
