Dr. Robert "Bob" Fred Bell, Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Alabama, passed away at DCH Regional Medical Center in
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on December 28, 2025. He was 88.
Bob was born on October 26, 1937, in Illinois, the son of Ivan Bell and Pauline Ellis Bell, and the eldest of three children (siblings Ivan Don Bell and Sara Ann Bell Corry survive him). From an early age, Bob balanced academic excellence with responsibility, working in his family's grocery business while pursuing his studies. A standout student, he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class at Palestine High School and was active in the speech team, basketball team, track team, and band-an early indication of the discipline, curiosity, and breadth of interests that would define his life.
A first-generation college student, Bob attended the University of Illinois, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in German, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Following his undergraduate studies, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent a year teaching in Munich, Germany. His scholarly specialties included seventeenth-century German literature and German exile literature (Exilliteratur), the body of German-language works written and published by anti-Nazi dissidents-many of them Jewish-who fled persecution from Germany after the Nazi Party's rise to power in 1933 and from Austria following the Anschluss in 1938. While pursuing his post-baccalaureate degrees at the University of Illinois, Bob met Christel "Chris" Wachsmuth, who was completing her master's degree in the same program. They married and would share a remarkable partnership in life and work for more than sixty-three years.
Following graduate school, Bob and Chris lived briefly in Lexington, Kentucky, before settling in
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with their three young children, Barbara, Michael, and Amy. Bob joined the faculty of the University of Alabama, where he became a tenured professor of German, served multiple terms as chair of the German Department, later chaired the Department of Modern Languages, and was an active member of the Faculty Senate. Chris worked as an administrative assistant in the English Department and later served as an adjunct instructor of German. Despite demanding professional lives, Bob and Chris steadfastly supported their children's wide-ranging extracurricular pursuits and fostered in them a deep love of learning, travel, culture, and the arts.
In addition to their partnership as devoted parents and educators, Bob and Chris formed an extraordinary professional team through their long association with the university and with the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA). Bob served on the SAMLA Executive Committee from 1974 to 1977. During this period, Chris gained extensive institutional experience within the Association, serving as Administrative Assistant from 1976 to 1983, as Deputy Executive Director from 1982 to 1983, and as Managing Editor of The South Atlantic Review. From 1990 to 1994, Bob and Chris assumed SAMLA's senior leadership roles as Executive Director and Executive Deputy Director, respectively, while also serving as Editor and Managing Editor of the Review. Together, they oversaw the publication of the journal and planned and ran SAMLA's annual November convention, contributing significantly to the vitality and continuity of the organization.
Throughout his career, Bob was also deeply committed to academic honor societies and student mentorship. He served as President of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Alabama, as faculty sponsor of Delta Phi Alpha-the national German honor society-and as dissertation director and committee member to many doctoral candidates over the years.
Committed to international education, Bob and Chris co-directed the University of Alabama's summer study abroad programs in Weingarten, Germany, and Klagenfurt, Austria, mentoring generations of students. To support this mission, the Bell Scholarship for Participation in Summer Study Abroad was established to assist German majors and minors in studying in Germany or Austria, extending Bob's legacy of access and opportunity.
A lifelong lover of music, Bob was a gifted singer who found great joy in choral music. He was a longtime member of the Tuscaloosa Civic Chorus and later sang with the Capstone Village Choir, continuing his musical involvement well into later life.
After retirement, Bob and Chris continued to share their love of travel and education with their family and friends. As avid members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Alabama, the couple took courses every spring, summer, and fall on a wide range of intellectually stimulating subjects from art to politics, with Chris-a founding member of OLLI at UA-offering her popular German courses until 2024. With OLLI, Bob and Chris traveled the globe, from regional outings and national trips to voyages spanning Asia, Europe, and beyond. To celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary, they invited their extended family on an unforgettable Rhine River cruise arranged through OLLI, followed in later years by a tour of Spain and a Baltic Sea cruise-journeys that reflected a lifetime of curiosity, generosity, and joy in shared experience.
Bob is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Christel A. Bell; his daughter, Barbara Bell Malin, J.D.; his son, Michael Bell, M.D.; and his daughter, Amy Bell, Ph.D.; as well as extended family, colleagues, former students, and friends whose lives he enriched through teaching, music, mentorship, and generosity.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, 811 5th Avenue,
Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Friday, January 9, 2026. A reception for family and friends will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the church.
