Robert G. Bennett, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, passed away on May 30, 2024, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Born on February 10, 1939, in Scranton, Pa, Bob's life was characterized by his warm spirit, enduring humor, and the love he shared with those around him.
Bob was the beloved husband of Anita for 44 years, a loving relationship that began on shared journeys as school bus drivers in Sayre. Together, they raised a family that included their children Randy Bennett (Margene Doloresco), Rick (Slone) Bennett, Mark Bennett (Josie Unsell), Sue Bennett, Adrian (Debbie) Gorsline, and Deidre (Mario) Bobet. Bob's legacy extends through his cherished grandchildren Kristin Dumas, Jamie Lee (Will) Miller, Angela (Kris) Plazola, Paige (Ben) Schreiber, Shaun Bennett (Stephanie Ferrier), Matthew (Shannon) Bennett, Shannon Bennett, Travis (Lauryn) Bennett, Trevor Bennett, Christy (Donny) Barrett, Rachel (Drew) Alexander, Summer Eldridge, Micah Gorsline, Amanda (AJ) Sepelak, Adrian (Tara) Race, Justin (Laina) Race, Tyler Race, Donovan Wynn, and his 36 great-grandchildren, who will all fondly remember their grandfather's laughter and gentle guidance.
Bob's dedication to his family was matched only by his love for farming. At the age of 16, he left school to work alongside his father on the family dairy farm, fulfilling his dream of working the fields. He later sold the dairy farm and went to work full-time driving concrete truck for Porter's Concrete Service. While working at Porter's Bob bought several cattle, beginning his hobby farm of raising beef. Bob spent a lot of time cutting and baling hay and tinkering on his farm equipment. He also took great pride in planting and maintaining his multiple potato patches. Since he raised beef and grew potatoes, it is no surprise that Bob was your typical "meat and potatoes" kind of guy this was always his preferred dinner. He eventually retired from Porter's but continued to work his hobby farm. His commitment to the land and his community was evident in every aspect of his life.
Bob was known for his friendly demeanor and sense of humor. He relished in good-natured banter, particularly with a friend of the family, Fran, who, along with many others, appreciated Bob's quick wit and playful teasing. His presence brought light-heartedness to any gathering, and his laughter was infectious.
Those who knew Bob would describe him as loving, friendly, and funny-a man who brought joy and kindness to every interaction. He was a friend to many, and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He also leaves behind his wife's siblings, Donna (Stuart) Brink, Dan (Nancy) Arnold, Shirley (Keith) Young, Denise (Dave) Viele, as well as several nieces, nephews, and their families. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Delos and Mary (Riley) Bennett, his siblings, Paul Bennett, Joan (Carl) Flory, and is survived by his sister-in-law, Michelle Bennett.
A quote that embodies Bob's approach to life comes from the esteemed Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Bob certainly succeeded by this measure, touching many lives with his kindness, laughter, and generosity of spirit.
As we honor Bob's memory, we reflect on a life well-lived, filled with laughter, love, and the simple pleasures that make life truly rich. We will gather to remember Bob at a graveside service on Friday, July 19th at 3 pm at the South Litchfield Cemetery in Bumpville. (2939 Bumpville Hill Road, Ulster, PA 18851)
All are invited to a dinner and time of sharing at the Sayre VFW following the graveside service. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com Those who wish may kindly consider a memorial contribution to the Animal Care Sanctuary, 353 Sanctuary Hill Rd, East Smithfield, PA 18817
Bob will be remembered not only for the life he led but for the hearts he touched along the way. Rest in peace, Bob; your spirit lives on in the land you cherished and the family you adored.
