Robert Lee Bruist, 81, South Mud Lake, Indiana, passed away at 7:02 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born March 2, 1944, in Augusta, Kentucky, he was the son of George Stanley Bruist and Mary Anna (Hargett) Bruist. He was married on May 11, 1968, to Ernestine (Wilkerson) Bruist, and she preceded him in death on August 17, 2022.
Bob retired from US Army Indiana National Guard, where he served with the 1st Battalion, 293d Infantry. He was drafted into active duty with the US Army during Vietnam and was a member of the VFW and American Legion at Rochester. For over thirty years, he worked for and retired from Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo. Living at South Mud Lake for over twenty-years, he loved fishing at the lake or spending time up at Mike’s Pizza drinking coffee and being with friends. In addition to hunting, he enjoyed tinkering in his garage, where he honed his skills in small engine repair.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie Bruist (Trent) Helms, Darby, Montana; bonus children, Archie and Debbie Haney, Huntington; daughter-in-law, Peggy Bruist, Kokomo; girlfriend, Tammy McCarter, Peru; six grandchildren, Rob Bruist, Florida; Nicole Bruist, Kokomo; Brandy Anderson and Frank Jones III, both of Florida; Jason Fagaly and Nicholas Fagaly, both of Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; and three nephews, Bobby Thomas, Brian Thomas, and Chris Thomas, all of Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Eugene Bruist; one grandson, Michael Bruist; two sisters, Norma Thomas and Betty Hargett; and one brother, Gary Bruist.
Military rites and services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana.
Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rochester VFW or American Legion.
