Robert Edward "Bob" Datz, 85, of Chicago, IL – beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend – passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Born on December 7, 1939, to the late Ed and Helen (Ziolo) Datz, Bob was raised in Chicago alongside his two sisters, Diane and Carol. He attended the University of Illinois, where he studied chemical engineering, before enlisting in the United States Navy. There, he became a Naval Aviator, stationed primarily in Pensacola, Florida. After completing his military service, Bob followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by joining the Chicago Fire Department, where he served with dedication for 36 years, retiring as a Chief.
In 1967, Bob married the love of his life, Anne. Together they raised four children and enjoyed 55 years of marriage, until her passing in 2022.
Those who knew Bob will remember his unwavering dedication to his family, his bravery, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and lifelong love of learning. Guests in his home were often treated to his witty puns and poems, lively accordion and harmonica playing, and captivating storytelling.
Bob is survived by his loving children: Christina (Ryan), Edward (Sarah), Eric (Amy), and Julie (Mike); his 11 adoring grandchildren: Samantha, Natalie, Peter, Andrew, Holly, Oliver, Charlie, Wally, Eddy, Mia, and Cara; his cherished sisters: Diane (Milan) and Carol (John); as well as many dear in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, July 6th, at Smith-Corcoran Chicago Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL 60646, from 10:00AM to 1:00PM, with reflections shared by his four children at 12:00PM.
