Robert L. (Bob) Eckert passed away on May 23, 2025. He was born on February 11, 1930 to Leo and Catherine Eckert of Syracuse, New York. Bob's wife of almost 56 years Jayne predeceased him in 2017. He is survived by his three sons Timothy of Herndon, VA; Hugh (Stacia Schwartz) of Fairfield PA; and Nicholas of Herndon, VA.
Bob grew up in Syracuse. He received his B.A. from LeMoyne College and his Masters from Syracuse University He then went into the Navy, spending several years as a communications officer on a destroyer. Most of his subsequent career was spent in the DC area as a civilian contracting officer and contracts manager for the Naval Air Systems Command. Bob was greatly esteemed by his colleagues. He married Jayne and they raised three sons. He and Jayne enjoyed a long and busy retirement – travelling widely as well as going on outings with friends.
Bob was a man of many different interests and talents. Widely read, he had a keen interest in history and current events and encouraged spirited discussion around the dinner table. He enjoyed different types of music – especially classical. He had a great appreciation for the outdoors – enjoying watching birds both in his travels as well as at the backyard feeder. He was particularly skilled at fishing and there were many memorable family meals featuring his "catch of the day". He was handy around the house, and successfully grew various vegetables in bis backyard.
Bob was a devout Catholic and devoted to his parish church – serving as an usher for many years. His service for many years as a Knight of Columbus showed his strong faith as well as his belief in giving back.
He was a patient, supportive father who always was ready to listen and provide help as needed. He had a wry sense of humor that always enlivened conversation with him.
