Robert Joseph Gronstal, 94, of Gastonia and formerly of Treynor, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Robin Johnson House on August 28, 2025.
Born in Council Bluffs, IA on September 10, 1930 to Joseph and Elvira Gronstal. Bob grew up and spent most of his life in Treynor, IA. He was a graduate of Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, class of 1952. He served two years in the Army during the Korean War before a banking career that would span over two decades. He was a local businessman and an employee of Treynor Community School District where he worked for 42 years before retiring in 2012.
Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman and gun enthusiast. He was also a pilot. He loved to read, play cards with friends, was crazy about Porsches, and loved sports, especially his Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a member of the American Legion and the NRA. What was most important to him, though, was his faith and his family. He was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor from 1930 to 2015 and Redeemer Lutheran in Gastonia from 2015 until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Joan; his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Edith Gronstal; brother-in-law, Jim Hiller; 4 nephews and 1 niece.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of over 58 years, Janice Gronstal; his sons, Thomas Gronstal (Sheri), Christopher Gronstal (O'Nealya); and his grandchildren, David, Abigayle, Benjamin, and Katie; beloved brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Gastonia, NC at a date to be determined.
