Robert Henry Obituary

Robert C. "Bob" Henry, 85, a longtime resident of Willow Street in Brattleboro, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at Vernon Green Nursing Home following a lengthy period of declining health.

Bob was born in East Orange, NJ on November 6, 1938, the son of Richard A. and Barbara (Cook) Henry. He was raised and educated in Madison, NJ. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1965.

He did his undergraduate work at Windham College and graduate work at Boston College.

He happily relocated to Vermont, got a teaching job, built a house, and on August 21, 1972, in Newfane, Bob was married to Helene Kiesel who predeceased him on July 30, 2021.

For over 30 years Bob taught at Brattleboro Junior High School. Additionally, he served as the alpine ski coach for BUHS and taught adult woodworking classes. His science classes were taught with enthusiasm, creativity, the unexpected, and much humor. He fostered connections with and had the ability to connect to students and fellow teachers. Those lucky enough to have him as a teacher got to spend time with maggots, dead animals, skulls, explosives, and lots of pranks. Post-retirement, he was one of the founding members of the Swap Shop at the Transfer Station. He spent hours building bluebird boxes and installing them all over Windham country.

Of his many pastimes and interests, Bob enjoyed fine woodworking, both snow and water skiing, collecting golf balls, spending time on Cape Cod, reading, finding and curating unique treasure collections. He was known as a jack of all trades, lovingly and meticulously maintaining his home for many years. Bob was also the person to call if you had a problem requiring creative problem-solving, be it carpentry, snow removal or snow mountain building, chainsaw use, or a practical joke.

Bob is survived by his two daughters, Lauren Brown and husband, Steve, their children Huxley and Eloise of Brattleboro and Susan Schoenecker and husband, Jon, their children Tyler and Abigail of Nashville, TN; a brother, James Henry of Elizabethtown, PA; one sister, Barbara Bartlett of Kirksville, MO; many nieces, nephews, close friends, and a pet mongoose.

The family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Green, caring for Bob, with patience and compassion for the past 5 years.

In accordance with Bob's wishes, there are no formal funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 25, at the North Barn, Retreat Farm from 1-3 pm.

Susan and Lauren,
I, too, had the honor of babysitting for you when you were kids. My mother was Mrs. Smith, who was the 8th grade math teacher on your dad's team at BUHS, from 1977-1995. Your dad was fun and talented man for sure. His sense of humor will be sorely missed and he was loved by so many. I'm sorry for your loss.

I had him as a science teacher in 8th grade and he was amazing. We had a mutual love of pranks and practical jokes and the same off-kilter sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

I will always remember Bob's enthusiasm and the energy he brought to any project he undertook. One summer (I think it was 1970) he and my former husband Dick White took five students to Bob's lakeside family home on Cape Cod to study the ecosystem there and to have fun while doing so. My job was to cook for this crew! By the end of our stay, everyone had learned to water ski except for me and Strebor, Bob's beloved black dog. (Funny...I've just realized the significance of the dear dog's name..."roberts"..another example of Bob's wit and humor.) I've remained a friend of Bob and Helene over the years. I was blessed with a last visit in 2018 with them at their Willow Street home. Last September I visited Bob at Vernon Green. I prefer to remember him as the "Black Diamond" skier who loved his life, his family, his friends, and the many students he inspired.

Mr. Henry was my 8th grade science teacher, and Lauren and Susan, I babysat you a few times when you were very young! He was an exceptional teacher, even when he made fun of my jelly shoes. I remember walking into the classroom one day to find him with a rubber goldfish hanging from his mouth. He was endlessly funny, enthusiastic about the material, and just a wonderful, kind human being. Lauren and Susan, I am so very sorry for your loss. Both of your parents were wonderful people and I am honored to have known them.

I had the pleasure to have been one of Mr Henrys students! One afternoon, he asked all of us to get crowded around the table, and to observe carefully! He asked us girls for a long strand of hair, and I quickly plucked out a long piece. He asked us all to come closer, and observe what happened as the piece of hair goes into the water. We all got in as close as we could, as he slapped his hand into the puddle of water, and it splashed up into our face. He was a big practical joker for sure! He was an awesome teacher, and a wonderful soul! Fly high Mr Henry! Deepest sympathy to his loved ones, and friends!
