Robert Hutchinson, known to family and friends as Bob, died Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Penn Medical Center, Plainsboro NJ. In his final days, he was surrounded by the love of his wife of 55 years and his five children, their spouses and his grandchildren. He was known to his grandchildren and many friends affectionately as Fob.
Born in Hightstown to Mary Powell and A. Leland Hutchinson in November 1945, he was a lifelong Mercer County resident. He was a graduate of Hightstown High School, Mercer County Community College, and Trenton State College. He was a Revenue Officer with the Department of Treasury's Internal Revenue Service.
He was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran and disabled veteran. He served during the Cold War in Alaska and was a member of the Sabotage Alert Team on an Air Force Station in the Aleutian Islands.
As an active member of the St Paul Church in Princeton, he was a longtime member of the Princeton Knights of Columbus Council 636, having served as their Grand Knight.
His devotion to family was central to everything he did. He loved being a father to his 5 children and a grandfather to his 12 grandchildren. He attended all the events of his children as they were growing up - every hockey game, wrestling match, and scout meeting he could. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for many years.
As his children became parents, he welcomed every grandchild with that huge smile of his. He took an active role in everything his grandkids did and was the proud grandfather at every event. Fob loved his time in Manasquan and enjoyed the beach with family. Most of all, however, he loved taking large family vacations and watching his grandkids form everlasting bonds. The last family cruise was in July 2024.
Bob met Gloria at Bambergers Department Store in the Princeton Shopping Center. They married in 1969 and raised their family with love and laughter.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria, his sons Robert Hutchinson Jr. and his wife Catharine McManus, Guy Anthony Hutchinson and his wife Rosanna, Thomas Hutchinson and his wife Sarah, William Hutchinson and wife Mari, and daughter Janice and husband Daniel Hillsdon.
He is survived by his sister, Judith DiCecco and her husband, James, and brother-in-law Nils Nelson. Robert was proceeded in death by his brother, William Hutchinson.
Fob is survived by grandchildren Catherine and Her husband Sean Frawley, Robert K. Moimba, Robert A., Guy, Erica, Natalie, Nicholas, and Nolan Hutchinson, and Carter, Kyleigh, and Cameron Hillsdon in addition to many nieces and nephews.
He was supported in his final days by his niece, Janice Nini Weinburg, and her husband, Dr. Fred Weinberg. Their kindness will not be forgotten.
The funeral will be held 9:00 am on Monday, February 10, 2025 from the Mather Hodge Funeral Home 40 Vandeventer Ave, Princeton, NJ.
