Mr. Robert Howard Jones, 81, of Knight Street, Elberton, husband of 57 years to the late Mary Ann Dickerson Jones, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at his residence.
Robert was born in Elbert County on March 3, 1944, son of the late Robert Boyd Jones and Laura Belle Payton Jones. He worked for many years at Elberton Mills and retired from Century Granite Company where he worked as a top polisher.
An avid outdoorsman, Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing, and participated in many fishing tournaments during his younger years. He was well-known for the tomatoes that he grew, often having over 100 plants each year. Always one to share the fruits of his labor with others, Robert’s tomato juice and homemade pickles were crowd favorites, second only to his famous stew. He was affectionately known as “Papa” and “Pop” to his family, and was a devoted caretaker to his beloved Mary Ann while she suffered from ALS.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Tami and David Thornton of Elberton; son, Tim Jones of Elberton; grandchildren: CJ and Hannah Brown, River Jones, and Hunter Jones, all of Elberton; and great-grandchildren: Rielyn and Colton. Along with his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters: Annie Ruth Scarborough and Dora Jones.
The family is at the residence of David and Tami Thornton, and will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Robert’s life will be conducted on Monday, December 22, at 2:00p.m. at Victory Baptist Church, with the Rev. Sean Baughman officiating. He will be placed in the church at 1:00p.m. Interment, alongside Mary Ann, will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Flowers are accepted, and contributions may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church Ramp Ministry, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
