Robert LaBate

Robert "Rocky" LaBate, age 85, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024, at Stonegate Village in Sandusky. Born on March 11, 1939, in Dearborn, Michigan, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Ilosvay) LaBate.
Rocky proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958, demonstrating a commitment to service that would remain a defining characteristic throughout his life. After his military service, he began a dedicated career with Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 32 years. In 1962, Rocky married the love of his life, Verbal June, and together they shared 50 years of marriage until her passing on February 18, 2013. Their union was blessed with daughters, and though he faced the heartbreak of losing his beloved wife and daughters, Yvonne Bridget LaBate and Sheryl Lynn LaBate, Rocky's strength and love for his family never wavered.
Rocky's legacy lives on through his daughter, Robin (Leonard) Giasone of Clyde Township; his grandchildren, Ted LaBate, Candise Wetmore, Brandon (Kelly) Cornett, Brittany Cornett, and Scott Padden; and his great-grandchildren, Ryder, Peyton, Piper, and Kora, who brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his brother, Richard LaBate; sisters, Joan Dodge and Mary Kirby; and many loving nieces and nephews. His siblings, John, Virginia, and Nick LaBate, preceded him in death.
A simple man at heart, Rocky found pleasure in life's everyday moments. He was an avid TV watcher, a hobby that provided him with both relaxation and entertainment. His love for making wine was well-known among his family and friends. Rocky also took great pride in working in his garden. Those who knew Rocky will remember him as a man who loved deeply and lived simply.
Military Honors and Interment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. Fr. David Blazek will officiate. Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Memorial Life Celebration Center in Kimball Township.
