Robert F. Lamons, 99, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025 just 17 days after the passing of his beloved wife of 77 years, Betty Jean Lamons. Born in Price, Utah, on June 27, 1925, Robert was the son of the late Fred and Lucille Beveridge Lamons.

At 17, Bob answered the call to serve in World War II, joining the U.S. Army Air Forces as a Staff Sergeant. From his base in Nuthampstead, England, he served as a navigator in the 398th Bombardment Group aboard B-17 bombers over Europe. For his bravery, he received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Legion of Honor, the highest honor bestowed by the French government.

After the war, he returned home and met Betty Bowers at the University of Miami. Their love grew into a lifelong partnership that spanned nearly eight decades. They built their life in Miami, later settling in North Bay Village and spending cherished time at their mountain retreat in Balsam, North Carolina.

Bob’s professional journey began as a high school biology teacher before he transitioned into outdoor advertising, placing billboards across Florida. He later served as advertising director for a national real estate developer, retiring early to enjoy more time with his family and the life he built with Betty.

Bob was a man of faith, a member of the South Miami Methodist Church and attended Balsam Baptist Church when in North Carolina. He was known for his quiet strength, kindness, love of woodworking, music, and spirited sense of adventure — from cross-country camping trips to waterskiing into his 80s.

In their final years, Bob and Betty were lovingly supported by dedicated caregivers at home and later by the exceptional staff at Haywood Lodge, who went above and beyond to ensure their comfort and quality of life. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who cared for them with such compassion.

He is survived by his children, Lucy Cogdill (Bobby) and Robert Lamons Jr. (Lillian); grandchildren Amy Spivey (Tarver), Matthew Cogdill (Laurel), Derek Lamons (Layda), and Jenesa Vivas (Alex); and great-grandchildren Novalie Lamons, Henry Spivey, Asa Vivas, Reed Vivas, and Derek Lamons. He is also remembered fondly by many extended family and dear friends.

Bob and Betty will be laid to rest together at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC — a fitting resting place for a devoted couple who lived a life of love, faith, and service.

Arrangements are entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Online condolences may be shared at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
