Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday July 17th from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM.
A funeral service will take place at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow in Hudler Cemetery in Shandaken.
Robert "Poppy" Matheus, 73, of Hurley died Wednesday July 9, 2025 at HealthAlliance Hospital:Mary's Avenue Campus. He was born December 18, 1951 in Kingston, a son of the late Walter and Florence (McCardle) Matheus.
Robert began his working career for F.L. Russell paper mill in Saugerties before working at Canfield and Micronetics in Kingston and finally for the Ulster County Infirmary before his retirement. He was a former member of the West Hurley Fire Department.
Surviving is his son Robert "Boomer" Matheus, Tricia Lynn Matheus, grandchildren Damien Sprague and his wife Amanda, Tobias Matheus and Maddisyn Ferrara, great grandchildren Brayden, Chase and Evelynn Sprague, a brother Kevin Matheus and sister Patricia Houghtaling. He is also survived by his Goddaughters Sherry Houghtaling-Shultis and Marlena Matheus as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Kingston Dialysis for the amazing care Poppy received.
He was predeceased by his wife of forty four years Marilyn Jean Balash Matheus, and his siblings Walter and Eugene Matheus, Sharon Hoffman, Bonnie Poirier and Rosemary Bradford.
