Robert Maynard Holt, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 17 to May 15, 2017.

Robert Maynard Holt passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon at 2:55 PM at his home in Nashville, Tennessee.   He was surrounded by his family when he passed and did so gracefully and without pain.  He had quietly and with great spirit fought a battle with cancer over the last 6 months of his life.

Maynard was born July 6, 1939 and would have been 78 years old July 6, 2017.   He is survived by a wonderful wife Vicki, a son Maynard, a daughter Ashley, a stepson Jimmy Taylor, and five grandchildren he loved dearly.   He and Vicki were married November 23, 1973 and have lived and loved in Nashville ever since.  Their daughter Ashley lives in Birmingham, Alabama and has two daughters, Brooke and Brayden.   Their son, Maynard Holt 3rd, lives in Houston, Texas with his wife Kathleen and their three children, Owen, Eliza and Ethan. Maynard has always placed a high value on education and is very proud of all of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.   Brooke is 10, sings, plays basketball and has never met a person she doesn't like.  Brayden is 6, swims and loves having lemonade stands with her big sister.  Ethan, aka Chico, is 12 and is an all-star baseball player and avid reader.  Eliza is 15, plays basketball and lacrosse, and is an all-star in the classroom as well.  Owen is the oldest at 18 and will attend Harvard University in the fall to play football. The grandchildren loved Maynard greatly and referred to him as Grandbuddy, a name that he had suggested to them and that was perfect.  He was a frequent visitor to Houston and Birmingham and saw many of the grandchildren's events and special moments.  Maynard Holt was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be forever in our hearts.

Maynard's parents were Jane Love Holt and Robert Maynard Holt, Sr.  He also had a brother, Edwin Love Holt.   Maynard was born and raised in Memphis where his father was the CEO of the Oliver Finnie Candy and Food company.  Maynard attended the Columbia Military Academy for one year and graduated from East High School in 1957.  He was an all Memphis football and basketball player at East High.   His East High basketball team won the Memphis City Championship.   Maynard was also a renowned local golfer and was most proud to have teamed with his dad to win the father-son golf tournament at the Memphis Country Club.  Maynard also attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was always very proud to have been a scout.  He worked at Oliver Finnie in the summers and had many friends at the Company.

Maynard's mother, Jane Love, had a sister, Lillian Love Fisher (aka Aunt Lil), who with her husband, Dr. Dan Fisher, lived in Memphis with their two sons, Dan and Dick.   Dan and Dick were childhood friends of Maynard.  Dick and his wife Dot live in Memphis still and Dan lives in Chattanooga.

Maynard chose to attend Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship after declining offers to attend UCLA, Ole Miss and the University of Tennessee, among others.  After injury at the end of his freshman year of football, Maynard went on to become Captain of the Vanderbilt golf team and also swam for the University.   He also became President of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta.   He loved Vanderbilt and was an avid supporter of the school.  He graduated in 1961.

Maynard Holt Sr. passed away unexpectedly in 1961 from a heart attack.   Maynard had planned to return home to work with his father but the Company was dissolved after his father's passing.  He loved and admired his father greatly and would for the rest of his life talk of him and the positive role model he had been for his son.  Ref: http://www.oliverfinnie.com/obit.html

After Vanderbilt, Maynard served in the US Army and then subsequently worked as a broker at EF Hutton.   He then enrolled at the University of Tennessee and obtained a law degree.   After graduating from the University of Tennessee, he worked for Provident Life and worked for a period of time in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  In the early 1970's, Maynard moved to Nashville and began practicing law, first with Snodgrass & Holt, then with Butler, Lackey, Holt & Snedecker.  Later, he was a sole practitioner.  He was very pleased to be licensed to try cases in front of the US Supreme Court.  His law career included many successful cases and he was most proud to have been the lead attorney on the initial public offering of Cracker Barrel as well as Service Merchandise.  He served on the board of Service Merchandise from the time of its first public offering until it's ultimate closure.

He was a great student of the markets and after a successful law career, he moved full time to establish his own market-analytics software company, Relevance 3.  Maynard spent the remainder of his professional years teaching, lecturing and holding seminars for those wishing to more carefully understand the technical trading of stocks and commodities.  He leaves behind a prolific amount of work and numerous great friends globally from this time in his life.

A scholarship has been established in his name in two sports at Vanderbilt University: The Maynard Holt Football Scholarship and the Maynard Holt Golf Scholarship.  Each year an athlete will be designated the Maynard Holt Scholarship award winner in each sport in perpetuity.   In his final days, Maynard appreciated greatly the kindness and warmth of the Vanderbilt athletics department.

In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, the family has requested donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America – Nashville and Memphis chapters. Donations can be made by writing a check to the Boy Scouts of America Foundation, noting in the memo “For the Memory of Robert Maynard Holt, Jr.” and can mailed to: Boy Scouts of America Foundation /  Robert Maynard Holt, Jr. Memorial Fund / 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane / Irving, TX  75015 or donations can also be made on-line using the Boy Scouts of America – A Place to Give website at: https://aplacetogive.scouting.org

i just went to Dad's page and noticed it wasn't active so I reactivated it. I think when I moved from TPH to Veriten they lost my contact info. Anyway, I am excited to renew it. Today, during church when the priest mentioned "prayers that we have in the silence of our hearts," I thought of you Dad. You are always with us Grandbuddy.

The other day I found myself going through some notes and emails that Dad and I had sent to each other over the years. He always had so much spirit and so much inner fire. So many things I do today and am today are directly linked to who he was. Not a day goes by that he isn't missed. As the song goes, "I will always love you."

Still Hard to believe you are not still with us Maynard but all the love and trading knowledge you so freely gave will always be in our hearts and minds. You were one of the most wonderful people I ever knew and one in a million for sure. Think about you often and will always miss that pipe smoke smell, your warm smile and the tender care you gave all of us.

I was so deeply saddened to learn of Maynard's passing. No longer will he be there to talk to. Maynard was a mentor and friend for many years and was such a fine=, kind and giving man. He has made my life richer for having known him and been a friend. He leaves behind such wonderful memories of a man that will long be remembered

Please accept my condolence on the occasion of Maynard's death. I was a year behind Maynard at Vanderbilt but I was in engineering school and had no classes with the "Arts & Party" boys as Maynard. At the end of my sophomore year, I pledged Phi and at the start of my junior year I was a pledge class of one. I was at the Phi House one afternoon doing chores for the actives and Maynard asked me to go to the Belle Mead Country Club and shag balls for him. We made an interesting looking couple as I was 5'4. He only had one club out-a 6-iron. He sent me out an incredible (to me) distance and proceeded to hit the first one over my head. The whole bag was like that. On the way to and from the country club Maynard seemed subdued almost morose. I had no idea he had very recently lost his father. When I called a fraternity brother in Chattanooga who had been responsible for my getting a bid to tell him about Maynard, He told me that Maynard had led a pre-school rush caravan to the major southern cities. The party had been at his house on Lookout Mountain and it was there that Maynard received the call that his daddy had died. My friend's daddy rented a private plane to fly Maynard back to Memphis.
Maynard was the whole package. He even dated a Miss America!
With sympathy,
Joe T. Lamb

Sallie and I were so sorry to receive the voicemail from "little" Maynard about Maynard's passing. I met Maynard in 1974 when my group bought control of Ireland's Restaurants; he did the securities work for that company and went on to represent us in other ways. He was a fine attorney and became a good friend. Sallie and Vicki became friends and played tennis together; Maynard called them "Big Killer and Little Killer." Maynard and I enjoyed several rounds of golf over the years; he was a good player and a real student of the game. He explained what he did with Relevance 3 but I never did really understand it - Maynard had a better mind than I did. He will be sorely missed by many of us in Nashville.

I was fortunate to meet Maynard a few times when he visited Houston. He talked to me like he had known me for years. His warm heart and love for people is evident through his family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I had the opportunity to meet Maynard and Vicki when my sister Kathleen Johnson married 'little' Maynard. I was charmed by his gracious Southern manners and the perpetual twinkle in his eyes. He was a kind soul, who traveled from Nashville to Syracuse to pay final respects when his daughter in law, Kathleen's, father passed away. I was there on vacation in Balds Head Island when the photo of Maynard with pipe in mouth, riding the bike, was taken. That moment is the picture I will always think of when I recall GrandBuddy.

I am a member of a group of Vicki's friends called "The Pack" and we thrived on a steady diet of Maynard stories. I think of Maynard at least twice a week as I had the pleasure of his (and his pipe's) company for a few rounds of golf on occasion. Every time I "relax" just before my backswing I think of Maynard saying "it's all in the hands Della". I'll miss you, you fine man.

Maynard and I practiced law together in Nashville. He was a good lawyer and well-respected by his fellow lawyers. I also played golf with him for twenty or thirty years. He was a joy and I will miss him.

Roy and I met Vicki and Maynard shortly after we were married and they were great next door neighbors! Vicki we have thought of you often since we moved at that time to Timber Lane. When we saw the obituary today we were so sad. We always knew the two of you were an accomplished team but reading about Maynard in the Tennessean today was truly remarkable. You are in our prayers.

My Dear Maynard, The last of the real and true Southern Gentlemen. Vicki and I have been friends for about 30 or so years. I always heard the Maynard stories and finally I got to meet Maynard. What a special man. He took an interest in me and my son right away....I was going through rough times and he had very good and gentle advice for me and Michael. Michael went to W& L and Maynard had a love for that school. When I would go to Vicki's I would hear from upstairs Hello Lisa...then Vicki would say come on down Maynard and say Hello to Lisa....We would talk a while and then Vicki would say it is time to go. Much love to you Maynard...I love you and yours!!!!!

Maynard was my cousin with whom I grew up in Memphis. In our youth, we spent many nights with his Grandmother, Alberta Love on Forest Avenue just a couple of blocks from Overton Park. I can remember, there was no air-conditioning and we could hear the lions in the Memphis Zoo. I also remember Christmas at the Holt home at Oakley and Highland, and spent many a night there also. Memories and Experiences become more important as we age. What good memories I have of Maynard, a wonderful man. May God bless Vicki, Maynard 3 and the rest of the family.

Maynard and I go back to the 4th or 5th grade in Memphis. Played sports together, chased the same girls and stayed friends throughout the college years. After college, I spent 4.5 years in the army, had married and really never came back to Memphis. Maynard and I played some serious golf together and won the city HS tittle our senior year. He had the lowest scoring average for the year, about 72.5. We played in the Memphis two man team event and shot 5 under par on the first day and was second at that point. Unfortunately, we went to one on our regular night spots (the Whirlaway) and ran into a little trouble. It is hard to play golf with one eye closed and we shop 4 over the next day.

Maynard was a great friend and we enjoyed a lot of years together growing up in Memphis. I know his family will miss him as we all will.

Maynard was my 1st cousin. His Mama and my Daddy were sister & brother! Maynard was one year older. He was the leader of the cousins. We six, then eight, spent every Holiday together at each other's homes! Ah, the memories! When I was in 7th grade Anderson Clayton Cotton Compamy sent my family to New York! When married I ventured to CA! We loved it when cousin Maynard would call and we'd hear that deep caring southern accent. We recently travelled to Memphis and visited Historic Elmwood Cemetery. Maynard's Mama, my special Aunt Jane, is there. (She travelled to Scarsdale, NY for our wedding and short sheeted the beds of all our Bridesmaids!) I have so many wonderful memories! I treasure all my Memphis gatherings and my cousin, Maynard! It was so good to reconnect at cousin Fisher's wedding! God Bless all who will miss him so! ??
