McDonald Keohane Funeral Home - SouthRobert Girard “Bobby Mac” McCarthy, 66, of Weymouth, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, following a lengthy illness. Born on March 22, 1960, in Boston, Bobby spent his final days surrounded by family, having just celebrated his birthday together. In his final moments, he passed peacefully as a special prayer was read by his brother-in-law, a reflection of the faith, family, and love that defined his life. Thank you to Bridges Memory Care and Caring Hospice for their guidance and kindness in his final days.
Bobby was the beloved husband of Nancy McCarthy, whom he met on Cape Cod in 1984 and married in 1990. Together, they built a life rooted in partnership, love, and family. They worked side by side, spent their weekends on the Cape, and shared countless moments together. He even convinced her to take up his favorite hobby, golf, so they could spend more time together.
He was the proud and devoted father of Connor, Liam and Kate McCarthy. His children were his best friends, and he was theirs. He was also the cherished “Grampy” to his grandson Nolan, a role he had looked forward to for years.
In addition to his loving wife, his sons and his grandson, Bobby is survived by his daughter-in-law Kate; his sister Gayle O’Connell and brother-in-law Dan O’Connell, his mother-in-law Jean Phalon; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, in-laws, godchildren, cousins, neighbors and lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Kate; his parents, Girard and Helen McCarthy; and his father-in-law, Bill Phalon.
A proud Braintree native, Bobby attended Braintree Public Schools, where he was a standout three-sport athlete in hockey, baseball, and soccer, serving as captain in each. He was an excellent student and especially excelled in math. As a kid, he was funny with a quick wit that was present throughout his entire life. He was a gifted athlete, particularly in baseball, and threw his first no hitter when he was 13 years old. His dad was an avid golfer and taught Bobby how to golf early, leading him to win many junior golf championships at a very young age. He was a proud member of “the Amherst Road gang”, and kept his strong ties to his elementary school friends throughout his entire life.
In 1978 he was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic for baseball, later earning an induction into the Braintree High School Hall of Fame and the Cranberry League Hall of Fame for his time with the Braintree White Sox.
Bobby went on to found McCarthy & Associates with his wife Nancy, where he served as President for many years. While he was known as a tireless worker, what mattered most to him was the life his work made possible. Owning his own business allowed him to prioritize what he loved most—his family. He was the dad who was always there after school, always coaching, always playing, always cooking on the grill. And when the day was done, he’d head back to work late into the night to make it all happen.
He is known to many as Coach Mac. Before he coached his sons, he had over a decade coaching Braintree sports starting in his high school days, throughout college, and even as a player coach for the Braintree White Sox. He coached his sons’ Weymouth hockey and baseball teams to state, regional, and national success, and opened his home and backyard to anyone who needed a place to play. Winters meant a backyard ice rink. Summers meant batting cages, basketball, and a house full of kids. Everyone was welcome. Even while spending all this time coaching, he was the biggest cheerleader at his daughter Kate’s gymnastics meets, plays and lacrosse games.
He leaves an impact on the countless players, families, and young athletes he coached and mentored over the years—many of whom considered him a second father.
Bobby loved life in a way that brought people together. He built a summer home on Cape Cod that became a cornerstone for family and friends—a place of unforgettable memories, including quiet weekends with Nancy and the kids, spending time with his sister’s family and all his cousins, and of course the legendary Fourth of July parties filled with fireworks, music, family, friends and laughter. One of his favorite parts about the Cape was all the dinners spent at The Skipper Chowder House over the past 35 years. His love for the Cape stems from the yearly vacations he would take with his family and cousins in Dennisport growing up. He loved Boston sports, Opening Day traditions, Patriots tailgates at Rodman in the Wildcat, Bruins games that always included a stop at LoConte’s, and annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach with his closest friends.
He loved yard sales, antiques and sports memorabilia, ice cream runs, his dogs Mac, Sammy, and Elwood, and steak tips on the grill. He loved his country, and deeply respected those who served it, a value instilled by his father, a World War II veteran.
More than anything, Bobby loved his family. He taught by example that what you do when no one is watching matters most. He believed in respect, especially for those who came before us.
He will be deeply missed for the way he brought people together, his intense loyalty, his overwhelming generosity, the way he showed up, and the way he loved.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 4/7/2026 from 3-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant St., Weymouth on Wednesday 4/8/2026 at 10 AM. Burial at a later date.
