Vivian McCarthy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Green Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery - Sapulpa on Mar. 30, 2026.
Vivian McCarthy, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026. She was born on December 29, 1938, in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to Hillary and Alice Hartley. She grew up in a large and loving family alongside her three brothers and three sisters.

In 1960, Vivian moved to Oklahoma City to follow her brother Steve, a decision that would change the course of her life. There she met her future husband John Phillip, when she went to the grocery store where he worked. That simple moment sparked a lifelong love story that lasted more than 65 years. They later discovered they both owned 1957 Chevrolets, something they always felt was a sign they were meant to be. After just three short months of dating, they were married on January 7, 1961.

Soon after, Phil was called to serve in the 5th U.S. Army, and the couple moved to Chicago. After two years of active duty, they returned to Oklahoma City where they added two sons, James and Steve to the family. Four years later, they moved to Sapulpa and opened their own store, Tru Discount Foods. While Vivian was primarily a devoted homemaker, she also helped in the store office and was known to "stir things up" in the bakery.

Throughout her life, Vivian found joy in simple pleasures. She loved gardening, fishing anytime and anywhere, and spending time outdoors. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, and cooking delicious holiday meals for her family. Her faith was important to her, and she read her Bible daily. Above all, Vivian cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, and loved watching them laugh and play, particularly as they splashed in the pool.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Claude, Steve, and Paul, and her sisters Marietta and Helen.

She is survived by her loving husband Phil, her son James and daughter-in-law Krista, along with their daughters Macy, Reese, and Riley, her son Steve and daughter-in-law Christine, along with their son Kamden, her sister Ruby, and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Vivian will be remembered for her love, strength, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love for donations to be made to Miller Hospice in Tulsa.
