Robert Paul Mullen, of
Furlong, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home on December 22, 2025. His wife, Mary, daughter Polly, and sons Mark and Tanner were with him throughout his last days.
Robert, (Bob), was born in Mauch Chunk, (Jim Thorpe), Pennsylvania, in January 1938 to Margaret Mullen. He was one of 46 cousins, the grandchildren of William Mullen and Viola nee Romig Mullen. There he lived until joining the US Air Force after high school, where he served as a meteorologist. While stationed in Greenland and around the North Atlantic, providing critical information to aviators and sailors, he also honed his skills at pool and playing cards. His time in the service prepared him well when he brought his experience and expertise to the University of Washington in 1960. There, with his penchant for numbers, he earned a degree in accounting while working as a meteorologist for the University and as an orderly at King County Hospital in Seattle. His greatest accomplishment during school, it might be said, was successfully wooing the love of his life, waiting in the wings as he and Mary worked their way through college.
Bob and Mary married in 1964, and he began his tenure as a Field Auditor for the State of Washington. He spent 27 years in that role, during which Bob and Mary moved their family from Washington to Ohio, then California, before finally returning to his roots in Pennsylvania in 1983. After retiring from the State in 1991 his work ethic only grew in scope. He supported Mary's entrepreneurial ambition to run a small business in
Doylestown, PA, helped many in the community with the organization of their finances (often providing his services pro bono), and went on to gain a position as a comptroller for a Doylestown-based defence contractor, where he stayed until his retirement in 2006. Bob was a beloved member of the community, joining friends for golfing trips, regular card games, playing darts at the Moose and Maennerchor in Doylestown, and exploring ventures with a local investment club.
He never flagged as a devoted husband, partner, and friend to Mary for 65 years. They had many adventures around the world, as two soul mates sharing a precious and rare kind of bond. His devotion to his children was just as true, with unconditional support, being their biggest fan and closest confidant, He is survived by Mary Mullen (Robertson), as well as his son Mark Mullen, daughter Polly Heeney with her spouse Tom Heeney, and his son Tanner Mullen. He was proud of his grandchildren: James Mullen, Amanda Heeney, and Tommy Heeney for whom he made the most of every opportunity to love and support. He was predeceased by his sister Louise DuBois, and by his second child Heather Mullen.
Bob was a true humanitarian, a provider, and a devoted friend to many. In his memory, he would simply ask us to be kind to others and to ourselves.
The Mullen family is deeply grateful to the nurses and doctors of Doylestown Hospital and Hospice for their compassion and excellence in care for all of us.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Please join the family from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Plumsteadville Inn, 5902 Easton Road, Pipersville, PA 18947.
