Wharton: Robert O'Malley, 79, of Wharton, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on September 20, 2025.

Born in Scranton, PA, and raised in Budd Lake, NJ, Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. Following his service, he built a career as an electrician and owned his own business, O'Malley Electric.

A devoted husband, Robert was married to his beloved wife, Susan, for 50 years until her passing in 2021. Together they raised two children, Brian and Jen, and built a strong family rooted in love and community.

Robert dedicated much of his life to serving Wharton through the Fire Department, where he held many roles and was honored to serve as Fire Chief in 1984. During his tenure, he led the department with courage and compassion, including the notable Heslin House gas explosion. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post #91.

Beyond his service, Robert found great joy in his passion for cars-especially hot rods-and was an active member of the NJ Street Rod Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and John ("The Duck") O'Malley; his wife, Susan; and his son-in-law, Kyle. Robert is survived by his son, Brian, and his wife, Geannie, and his grandson, Justin; his daughter, Jen, and his granddaughter, Shannon; his sister, Frances; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 23, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bermingham Funeral Home in Wharton. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Locust Hill Cemetery, immediately afterward.

Robert will be remembered for his dedication to family, community, and country, and for the way he lived his life with pride, service, and love.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wharton Fire Department are appreciated.
