Robert James Ricer, 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away following a short battle with cancer on November 21, 2024, with Elvis singing and his loving family at his side.

Born on November 18, 1942, in Newcomerstown, Bob was the cherished son of the late Robert Burns Ricer and Alice Isabelle “Sue” (Reiss) Ricer Marstrell.

A proud graduate of Garaway High School in 1961, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with distinction during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was during his time in Berlin that he met and fell deeply in love with his lifelong companion and soulmate, Hannelore G. Schulz. Their love story continued to unfold in Italy, where they welcomed their beloved daughter, Nadine, before eventually returning to the United States.

Bob’s professional journey was a testament to his hard work and dedication, having worked with Warner & Swasey, Nichols Discount City, and, after many years, retiring as the proud owner and operator of Dover Flea Market.

A passionate traveler at heart, Bob relished exploring the world, especially cherishing trips to his favorite destinations—Myrtle Beach, Europe, and Punta Cana. The ocean brought him peace, and he found joy in spending time tinkering in his garden or sailing. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing and was an enthusiastic fan of Elvis’s music and seafood. But above all, his greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved wife, daughter, grandchildren, and extended family.

Throughout his life, Bob was surrounded by lifelong friendships, many of which were nurtured on vacations and at the New Philadelphia VFW and B.P.O.E. #510. An avid sports fan, Bob’s heart was firmly with the Cleveland professional teams. Additionally, Bob and Hannelore greatly enjoyed delivering Mobile Meals to area residents, not only delivering the food, but sharing in a song, warm hug, and friendly smile to the recipients.

Bob’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and loyalty—a man who found happiness in both the simple pleasures and the grand adventures of life.

He will forever be cherished by his wife, Hannelore of New Philadelphia; his daughter, Nadine (Matt) Russell of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Kailey (Dakota) Keck of Bolivar and Cooper (Jeanette) Russell of South Korea; his siblings, Janet (Don) Kemp of New Philadelphia, Linda (Bill) Angus of Twinsburg, and John Marstrell of Florida; and his beloved dog, Bella. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and their children.

No public events are scheduled presently. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be directed to either Ohio’s Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 1432 Tall Timber Rd NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
