Robert E. Rust, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on March 22, 1939, in Mount Pleasant, Texas, Robert devoted his life to his family and his work as a supervisor in highway maintenance for the State of Texas. He was a dedicated provider who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had what they needed, often stating, "if the children didn't belong there, then neither did he."
Robert is survived by his wife Wanda Smith, his four children: Michael and his wife Cindy, Jan, James, and Gail Cunningham and her husband Chris. He cherished his role as a father and took immense pride in his grandchildren, including Mikey Rust, Joshua Rust, Matthew Rust, Toni Lynn Neal, Anthony Walsh and his legacy continues through his many great-grandchildren.
He was a man of simple pleasures and strong values; the annual family reunions brought him immense joy as he watched his loved ones gather together, sharing laughter and creating memories. Robert's lighthearted moments included the girls playfully combing his hair while he napped in his favorite recliner, and his fondness for the lake house, where he taught his children how to fish. Family fishing trips sparked joy, even when a snake unexpectedly devoured the contents of their fish bucket.
In addition to his passion for family, Robert appreciated the time spent with his in-laws, treating them as his own parents. They enjoyed hours of penny-anti poker and engaging conversations, fondly recalling stories about life and love.
Visitation will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel on January 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM. A funeral service in honor of Robert will take place on January 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Rosemound Cemetery at 2:00 PM. His memory will forever reside in the hearts of those who knew him.
