Robert Louis Schmelz, age 79, of Potosi, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA. He was born on September 27, 1945, in Platteville, the son of Louis and Ruth (Peake) Schmelz. Robert graduated from Potosi High School in 1964 and was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country until his honorable discharge in 1969. On November 7, 1970, Robert was united in marriage to Linda Koeller at the Bethlehem E&R Church in Lancaster. He held a variety of jobs in his early years but spent most of his working years at John Deere Dubuque Works. After retiring, Robert enjoyed his time outdoors fishing, hunting, gardening, woodworking, and taking care of his yard. He dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren. Throughout his outdoor adventures, he touched the lives of countless people with his kindness, wisdom, and laughter.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda; their children: Amy (Chris) Kester, Becky (Chad) Fritz, and Joe (Kim) Schmelz; grandchildren: Ryan and Jacob Kester, Noah and Courtney Fritz and Lydia and Brady Schmelz; his sister, Sheila (Lonny) Marcue; his in-laws: John Koeller and Judy (Larry) Maahs; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Warren and Lucille Koeller; a son, Daniel R.; sister-in-law, Doreen (Ken) Wagner; and his aunts and uncles.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Holiday Gardens in Potosi. A private family graveside service with military honors will be held at British Hollow Cemetery, Potosi. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Potosi is assisting the family.
