Robert Leon Simmons was born on March 15, 1970, to James Simmons and Mandy Neal, as the fifth of seven children. Robert committed his life to Christ at an early age and remained a devoted member of The Sanctuary @ Mt. Calvary for many years. Over the past fifteen years, he played an integral role in the church's leadership, significantly contributing to the Executive Council and supporting various ministries within the congregation. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Robert's commitment to the church was unwavering. He recognized the additional needs of the ministry and took the lead in ensuring fiscal accountability, offering his full support to Pastor John Allen Newman and the church's work. His dedication and service left an indelible mark on the church and the community it serves.
Raised in
Jacksonville, Florida, Robert completed his education with Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and graduated from Jean Ribault Senior High School in 1988. He began his career as an instructor at Fam-Co Learning and Development Center, a non-profit child daycare center under the direction of his aunt, the late Willye F. Dennis. He continued his career in education with DCPS at various education centers, including Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center. In addition, he also worked part-time at Anheuser Bush and co-owned New Attitudes Car Wash in the 90s with his brother Anthony. For the last twenty-six years, he was employed at Key Hyundai, where he served as the Sales Manager. Throughout his career, he achieved significant accolades and was highly admired among his colleagues. Robert was a diligent worker, dedicated to his job and colleagues. He displayed an exceptional work ethic, never missing a day of work.
Known for his debonair fashion sense, physical presence, and spirited personality, Robert always made an impact. He had a powerful speaking and singing voice. He auditioned for American Idol and X Factor, progressing through several rounds. Despite facing strong competition, his talent and charisma shone through, earning him recognition and praise from the judges.
After attending the Oprah Winfrey Show as an audience member, producers were so impressed by his captivating spirit that they invited him back as a featured guest. His appearance on the show was well-received, highlighting his dynamic personality. Following this, Robert's story was also showcased in "O" magazine, where readers were introduced to his journey.
Robert was a sought-after figure to speak at various events and funerals. Robert consistently demonstrated his leadership and commitment to his community and left a lasting impression wherever he went. Additionally, Robert was a huge fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars and was a season ticket holder for several years.
Robert was a devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, and the heart of his family. He had a passion for real estate, cars, and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle. He was exceptionally generous, with a contagious bright smile, and cared deeply for everyone, especially his loved ones. Robert had a special bond with his sister Maria, who remained by his side throughout his battle with cancer.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Lillie Mae Neal in 2011; his parents, James and Mandy Neal Simmons in 1993; his youngest brother, Kenneth Simmons in 2000; and his oldest brother, Anthony Simmons in 2024.
Robert is survived by his sons, Robert Simmons, II and Tyler Fann-Simmons; his sisters, Audrey Kempt (Greg) and Maria Simmons; two brothers, James Simmons (Joyce) and Noel Simmons; uncles, Claude Simmons (Gwendolyn) and Ronald Neal (Carolyn); aunts, Mattie Leggett and Carolyn Simmons; nieces, Andrea Jackson (Gary), Tomeka Simmons (Antoine), Latrice Kempt-Leshoure (Michael), Latia Myers (Tyree), and Leondra Simmons; nephews, Brandon Simmons (Crystal) and James K. Simmons; and a host of godchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
