W.F. Gormley & Sons Funeral ChapelIt is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bob von Essen, a beloved husband, father, and friend, who lost his courageous battle with cancer on August 15, 2025, at the age of 64.
Born on July 6, 1961, in Bakersfield, California, Bob spent his childhood in Visalia, Porterville, Manteca, and Lodi. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1980 before attending Fresno State University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He moved to New Zealand on a Rotary scholarship and worked on his MBA in International Business at the University of Auckland. He later settled in Melbourne, Australia for 8 years. After returning to California, he attended the Executive Education Program at Stanford University.
Known for his unwavering work ethic and dedication to his loved ones, Bob was a true family man. He was always there to support his wife, Leanne, and was a dedicated father in every way to his sons, Evan and Harrison. Bob’s outgoing, fun-loving personality and his great sense of humor will be missed. He was a gifted storyteller with a wealth of personal stories that always brought surprises and laughter. His kindness and warm spirit brought joy, peace, and laughter to everyone who knew him.
Bob’s integrity and honesty were the cornerstones of his character. He had a successful career, working with notable companies such as NCR, RBN, IBM, Unisys, and Ensono. His colleagues admired him for his strong moral compass and commitment to excellence in every role he undertook. Beyond his professional achievements, Bob was an active member of the community. He was a volunteer at Westlake Charter School and Jesuit High School and was supportive of Jesuit High School’s sports program.
Bob is survived by his wife Leanne, his children Evan and Harrison, his mother Esther von Essen, and his siblings Christine, Julie, Kevin, and Ken, and many nieces and nephews. His father Clyde and his brother Jeff passed away previously.
Bob's legacy of love, kindness, hard work, sound advice, and integrity will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11:00 am on September 20, 2025 at St Anthony's Catholic Church, 660 Florin Rd. in Sacramento, CA with a reception to follow at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).org/?form=FUNGMWGYGJJ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network)) in Bob's honor, to support those fighting similar battles.
