Robert Weaver Obituary
Robert Clute (Bob) Weaver died September 8, 2025, at Casey House (Montgomery Hospice), at the age of 82.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 30, 1943, he was the first child of Charles and Alice Weaver. He and his sister, Barbara, were raised by their mother after their father was killed in a car accident when the children were 7 and 5. A high school debater, Bob was active in church and politics, and was president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and an Eagle Scout.
Bob received his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. From a young age, he was interested in politics, law, architecture, and civil rights. Throughout high school and college, he was known by nicknames such as "Senator," "Governor," and "Judge." A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and ROTC in college, he was a member of Student Senate and editor of the Nebraska Transcript during law school. For two summers, Bob was a Senate Intern in Washington DC. Although his Senator/employer discouraged him from doing so, Bob participated in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1963 March on Washington, and enjoyed telling the younger generation about that experience.
The summer before starting law school, he met his wife in Love Library on the University of Nebraska Lincoln campus. They married in 1970, then moved to New Jersey, where Bob was stationed in the Army before leaving for duty in Vietnam the following year. While at Fort Dix, he was defense attorney for "scared young kids" who went AWOL from the Army, and was proud to give them excellent representation. He was honorably discharged as an Army Captain in August 1972, in time to enroll in a graduate law program at the University of Georgia. His advisor was former US Secretary of State, Dean Rusk.
During his career, Bob focused on environmental law, conservation, and infrastructure issues. He worked at the US Department of Interior, National Association of Counties, and law firms in Washington, DC and Texas. In San Antonio, he wrote position papers for Henry Cisneros during his mayoral campaign and after his election. In the final 20 years of his work life, Bob was a dual and then solo practitioner in the Dupont Circle law firm, Kelly and Weaver. He represented cities, counties, and municipalities and their interactions with the Environmental Protection Agency. As a lobbyist, he is credited with acquiring millions of dollars of funding for bridges, aquafers, and sewer systems throughout the country.
Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jerilyn (Jeri) Adam Weaver; their four children: Adam (Adrienne), Allyson Bunker (Brian), Abby Getzel (Bryant), and Arielle; and five grandsons, David, James, Jeremy, Ethan, and Avery; and his sister, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, a nephew and nieces, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at National United Methodist Church, 3401 Nebraska Ave., NW, Washington, DC, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Montgomery Hospice.
