Robert Woods Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Apr. 19, 2023.
On June 8,1956 a joyous event took place in the life of late Rev. Dr. Robert and Margaret Woods, a baby boy Robert Jr. was the first edition of what would become a family of five. Robert Jr. remained the only offspring for several years and would always claim the status of being first among his siblings. Robert attended what at that time was known as South 8th street school later known as Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School. Robert excelled in his studies and had an inclination for music and eventually upon graduation from 8th street school was accepted as a student at Arts High School an historic magnet school in the city. In high school Robert gravitated towards the chorus which at that time was considered one of the best in the state. His love for music would always be a part of his life. Upon graduating from high school Robert enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Ord Monterey Bay on the Pacific Ocean coast in California which was closed in 1994. After graduation from basic training Robert enlisted for a time going to school for communications.
Once Robert returned home he pursued a career path in health related fields, working as a staffing agent for various companies in the metropolitan area. As stated earlier a love for music was recognizable early on. Robert began singing in various choral groups in Essex County eventually directing church choirs for forty plus years. At the time of his death he was employed as organist choir/director for the First Baptist Church in Madison N.J. Robert loved good food, good music and a good time. He will be missed by many. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Dr. Robert and Margaret Woods and a sister Margaret. He leaves to mourn his loss a brother Mr. Ira C. Woods an adopted sister Ms. Roslyn Brown and Family a special God sister Ms. Tara Brown. Robert is also survived by longtime friend and fellow musician Beverly Diane.
A very special thanks to everyone for their prayers, time and contributions. May God Bless you all.
