Rodney A. Voelker, 86, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, in hospice care, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 4, 1938, in Ohio, he was the son of the late George A. Voelker and Leola Gilson.
Rodney's life was defined by a deep sense of service, both to his country and to his faith. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at a young age, proudly serving for 23 years as a Chief Counselor Recruiter. His leadership in the Navy was marked by a genuine commitment to helping others, guiding many service members as they navigated the challenges of military life. His dedication to his country left a lasting legacy, as he mentored and shaped the careers of countless men and women who followed in his footsteps.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Rodney continued his passion for service by founding Nationwide Resumes of America, a business dedicated to assisting military veterans, particularly Navy personnel, in transitioning their military skills to civilian careers. A published author, Rodney wrote extensively to help service members make successful transitions into the workforce, offering practical advice and insights that became invaluable resources for veterans across the country.
Rodney was also a deeply faithful man and a longtime member of First Baptist Church Norfolk. He served the church community with distinction, and in recognition of his unwavering dedication, he was honored with the title of Deacon. His faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a spiritual guide and mentor to many within the church.
In his spare time, Rodney enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him peace and fulfillment. He had a passion for metal detecting, often spending hours outdoors in search of hidden treasures. He also found joy in stained glass art projects, using his creativity and attention to detail to craft beautiful, intricate designs. Rodney was an avid gardener, cultivating a garden that reflected his love for nature and provided a tranquil retreat. He also enjoyed researching genealogy, delving into his family's history and discovering connections that enriched his understanding of his roots. These hobbies brought him great joy and were a testament to his patience, craftsmanship, and love for the simple pleasures in life.
Rodney's love for his family was at the heart of everything he did. He was a devoted husband to Sally N. Voelker, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Together, they raised four daughters: Blenda (Brent) Allen, Rhonda (Rodrigo) Vernaza, Karen (Bill) Durham, and Maureen (Donal) Birmingham. Rodney was also the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His family brought him immense joy, and he was a constant source of wisdom, support, and love to those closest to him.
Rodney's loyal feline companion will also miss him dearly. The cat was a constant presence by his side, offering comfort and companionship throughout his life, and their bond brought Rodney much joy in his later years.
Rodney's legacy is one of service-both to his country and to his faith-and the profound impact he made on the lives of his family, friends, and all those he mentored will never be forgotten.
A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veterans' organization or the American Heart Association in his memory.
A memorial service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory Princess Anne Chapel & Crematory, 3445 Princess Anne Rd on February 1, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
Rodney will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on through the many lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and enduring commitment to service.
