MAYSVILLE — Roger Dale Hendrickson (age 73) completed his earthly journey on Jan. 18, 2025, after surviving 18 months with pancreatic cancer.
He was born on July 13, 1951, at Hayswood Hospital in Maysville.
He was a graduate of Maysville High School and Morehead State University.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Hendrickson and Elizabeth (Hendrickson) Corns, Sister Darlene (Hendrickson) Applegate, and Mother-in-Law Geneva (Jenny) Applegate.
He is survived by his brother Leonard Hendrickson (Sue), Father-in-Law Wilburn Applegate, Sisters-in-Law Jacqui Harrison (Randy), Penny Boden, Brother-in-Law Terry Applegate (Gigi), and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He married his wife Melanie (Applegate) Hendrickson of 44 years, whom he met while he was the tennis instructor on the Maysville Community College tennis courts. They remained side-by-side in all their adventures including raising their two children, loving on four grandchildren, building homes, craft making, vacations, church, shopping, and sporting events.
Loved and missed by his Daughter Kyla (Hendrickson) Wombles and Son Kinley Ryne Hendrickson, Son-in-Law Mark Wombles, Grandchildren Dalaynie, Liam, Cora, and Neva Wombles and future Daughter-in-Law Katie Blakefield.
He always placed his family at the top of his list of priorities. He enjoyed camping with his family and spending more money than expected on memorable vacations. He was the best father and grandfather and always made it to every event to celebrate his children and grandchildren. He always said, "When the children and grandchildren come to visit, it's all about them."
Roger touched many lives through his teaching at Maysville Jr. High School, Mason County Middle School, counseling, and coaching tennis.
He was a partner of Crosspoint Community Church and a member of the men's group.
He was a member of Ringgold Lodge and DeKalb Lodge.
He became a real estate agent to pursue his retirement adventure of flipping houses and becoming a landlord.
For those who know Roger well, his passion was playing tennis daily. From playing matches at Beechwood Park and Maysville High School, he then attended Morehead State University on a full tennis scholarship.
When he returned from college, he won numerous tournaments in the Beechwood Park League with many different partners each year. He continued his love of tennis by developing other players through camps, group and private lessons at Maysville Community College, Ripley, Maysville Country Club Tennis Pro, and Mason County students. One of his most memorable tournament wins was the Bluegrass State Games with his son, Kinley, as his doubles partner.
He was known as Tennis Pro, Paper Boy, Proofreading Expert, Pizza Man, Customer Service Representative, Personal Chauffer, Collector of first edition books, coins, records, tennis racquets, hats, comic books, pool boy, landscaper, handyman, sports cards, glassware, and any good deal.
He loved to bargain shop at yard sales and Goodwill's. However, his most amazing titles were Husband, Dad, Papaw, and Child of God.
The visitation will be 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, at Crosspoint Community Church (Kenton Station Road).
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. with Pastor Chad Current officiating. Moore and Parker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be at Hillcrest Garden of Memories. Active Pallbearers will be Kinley Hendrickson, Mark Wombles, Liam Wombles, Jason Applegate, Terry Applegate, Cole Boden, Braun Applegate and Joe Redden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dale Helphenstine, Harrison Applegate and Wilburn Applegate.
