Roger Johnson Majors
1931-2024
ST. GEORGE- Roger moved on to ride his horses in greener pastures with his wife Helene on February 29, 2024, in St. George, Utah, at the age of 92.
Roger was born on October 20, 1931, in Huntington, Utah, to Roscoe Conklin and Eva Johnson Majors.
Roger was married to Gaynell Arnold from 1950 to 1983, and had three children together; Deena Gay, Rodney Wade (Liz), and Jace Arnold (Rebecca).
Roger met and married the love of his life, Helene Anderson Steel, in 1983, where he gained three additional children, Craig (Karen) Steele, Susan (Lee) Markley, and Gene (Michelle) Steele.
Roger was a member of the Diamond Fork Riding Club, and a lifelong member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, and The Operating Engineers.
Roger grew up in Huntington, Utah, where he developed a love for horses and animals at a young age, helping his Grandpa Johnson in his Veterinarian Practice. Roger built homes for Glen Anderson in Huntington and worked for the McKinnon Coal Mine in Huntington Canyon, where he learned how to weld. Roger and a good friend then opened a welding business in Castle Dale, Utah.
Roger and his family moved to Spanish Fork, Utah, where he worked for WW Clyde for the next 25 years as a diesel mechanic and welder. During that time, Roger opened a side business at home welding horse trailers and chariot buggies. Roger got involved in Chariot Racing during a trip to Idaho with his brother-in-law Dave to watch the races. Roger had a passion for breeding horses and raising racehorses for flat track and chariot racing; Roger credits his dad, Roc, and Uncle Beryl for teaching him how to train horses. Roger’s wife Helene shared the same passion for horses, after they married, they lived in Spanish Fork for a while then moved to Arizona, where they continued to breed and raise horses. Roger worked for Sun City Golf Course in Arizona as a diesel mechanic until he retired, Roger and Helene moved to Colorado, and eventually back home to Utah. Roger continued breeding horses and raising colts up to the age of 87. Roger and Helene have had many different breeds and colors of horses throughout the years, but never a Palomino. Their last colt was a Palomino Paint that they named “RH Last Chance.”
Roger was preceded in death by his loving wife Helene; his parents; mother-in-law, Rhea Anderson; daughter-in-law, Karen Steel; son-in-law, Lee Markley; brother, Ross; sister, Kathy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Reed and Lois Arnold; sisters-in-law, Viola (Dean), and Nancy (John).
Roger is survived by his children; siblings, Jethro, Lyndsey (Kirby), Garland (Laura),  Shawnee (David), and Sheridan; his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Gwen Thompson, Redia (Warren), and LaDonna (Dave).
