Roger David Nienow, age 92, a lifelong resident of Merrill, WI, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Wood Aven Health & Rehab Center in Wausau, WI, while under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services. He was born on July 23, 1932, to the late Arthur and Edna (Borchardt) Nienow in Merrill, WI. Roger attended and graduated from Merrill High School with the class of 1950.
Roger was an over-the-road truck driver, working for a wide variety of companies, including Wally Jahns, Radtke Transit, Haupt Contract Carriers and G&R Transport. During his retirement years, Roger was a coach driver for Nationwide Bus Tours. Roger enjoyed 43 years of camping at Campers Haven, as he looked forward to being out in nature and appreciating the peace and quiet. He was a member of the Eagle’s Club in Merrill, and active member of the Lincoln Gun Club and a life member of the NRA.
Roger was a truly remarkable individual. A mentor, a friend, a father and the very definition of the salt of the earth. He will be dearly missed.
Roger is survived by his children: Renee (Dale) Bychinski of Woodbury, MN, Todd (Peggy) Nienow of Merrill, WI, Michele Sweet of Wausau, WI, and Russell (Connie) Endvick of Wausau, WI, grandchildren: Amanda (Nick) Austreng of Woodbury, MN, James (Kaia) Bychinski of Woodbury, MN, Keegan Sweet of Florida, Logan Sweet of Wausau, WI, and Branden Anderson of Schofield, WI, great grandchildren: Elsa, Theo and George Austreng and Freya Bychinski. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Helen (Frank) Berndt and Evelyn (Hugo) Schleif and brother: Elmer (Polly) Nienow.
A prayer service for Roger will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral Home at 301 Eagle Drive, Merrill, WI. Chaplain Janice Kuder will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the funeral home, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the town of Corning.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services, the staff at Wood Aven Health & Rehab for their endless care and compassion during their dad’s stay.
