Roger Francis Vierra

Roger Francis Vierra, of Hanover formerly of Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 9, 2025 at the age of 90.
Roger graduated from Rhode Island College (Phi Beta Kappa) and received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University and M.A. from the University of RI. He was the head of the English Department at Portsmouth High School for most of his career where he also coached soccer, basketball and baseball. Roger was a standout on the Rhode Island College basketball team and inducted to the RIC Sports Hall of Fame but his greatest joy in athletics came from watching his two sons and grandchildren play! He also enjoyed his time with the Hanover Lions Club and of course, his evenings were centered around his beloved Red Sox, often staying up past midnight even if they disappointed.
Roger was married to the love of his life Maureen (McHugh) Vierra for 65 years. They raised their 2 sons in Barrington, RI before moving to Portsmouth, RI and eventually moving to Hanover 25 years ago to be near their children and grandchildren.
Roger was the son of the late Frank and Bertha (Clark) Vierra. Along with his wife Maureen, he was the devoted father to Roger Jr (Maryann) of Norwell and Scott (Lisa) of Norwell. He is also survived by 5 cherished grandchildren Erin, Darci, Amanda, Scott Jr, and Kristi and great-grandpa to Luke Francis, Shea & Emerson.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 13th at Sullivan Funeral Homes, 551 Washington St. Rte. 53, Hanover from 3pm-7pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10am Saturday, June 14th at Our Lady of the Angels Parish - St Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street, Rte. 139, Hanover.
