Obituary published on Legacy.com by Zacherl Funeral Home - Fond du Lac on Oct. 30, 2025.
Roland "Ronny" D. Gyr, 92 entered into eternal life on October 27, 2025, following a brief battle with cancer. He resided at The Meadows in Fond du Lac. He was born on October 20, 1933, in Fond du Lac to the late Hans and Lena Gyr.
Ronny married Dorothy on December 26, 1956, and they were blessed with three children; Susan, James and Kathryn. Ronny followed his father into the excavating business. He served in the Army from 1956 to 1958 and then two years in the Army reserve. He was proud of his service; flew the flag at his home and at The Meadows. He worked for the city of Fond du Lac a few years but then joined his brothers Leonard and Hans at L & H Gyr Excavating Company. He could operate all the equipment but mainly was their backhoe operator. He was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local 139 since 1963. He enjoyed driving around Fond du Lac with family and pointing out all the basements he excavated. He retired in 1995.
Ronny and Dorothy enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home. His favorite meal to eat was ham, scalloped potatoes and German sweet chocolate cake for dessert. He liked to be outside doing yard work or relaxing on his deck enjoying a Budweiser. He and Dorothy liked to go for car rides. They visited family and drove to casinos. Even at The Meadows he continued with bus rides to the casinos up until his illness. He was a Cadillac enthusiast owning several during his lifetime. On a Saturday afternoon you could find him with a bucket and a shammy shinning up his car. Dorothy and Ronny enjoyed trips to Branson, Hawaii, Switzerland and their annual trips to California to visit Jim and his family. They would even get some gambling in with a side trip with Jim to Las Vegas.
Ronny was a very generous man who would go out of his way to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He liked to visit Sue, Marc, and Mike in Appleton. Grandpa would challenge Mike to a game of blackjack. He enjoyed meals at Kathy's and playing catch with Kathy's dog, Tango. In August he was at his grandson Doug's house celebrating his great grandkids' birthday and meeting his newest great grandson.
He would often say he was blessed to be 92 and have lived such a great life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Dorothy.
Roland is survived by Sue (Marc) Hipple, Jim (Belinda) Gyr, Kathy Gyr, grandchildren Doug (Beth) Hipple Mike Hipple, Kyle and Kasey Gyr, great-grandchildren Griffin Hipple, Weslie Hipple and Everett Hipple.
