Obituary of Lois L. Gyr
Lois Ann Lachnicht Gyr passed away peacefully on September 4, 2023. Lois was born on May 10, 1933 to Jerome Lachnicht and Veronica Mooney Lachnicht. She grew up in LeRoy, New York, and continued her education at Syracuse University. Lois was also a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She married Rudolf Gyr in 1955.
Lois is survived by her children, Gretchen Cantor (David), Christopher Gyr (Colleen Galvin Gyr), Mauritia McGuire (Michael) and Philip Gyr, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Her family also included MarieAnne WIllemyns, an exchange student from Belgium. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy, and brother Jerome.
Lois practiced her profession as a speech therapist for many years, ending her career with Steuben County BOCES. After retirement, she continued to volunteer her services for incoming kindergartner evaluations.
Lois and Rudy were avid gardeners, hikers, cross-country skiers and active participants in the local arts community and nature conservancy efforts. Lois had a beautiful voice and was often cast as the female lead in community theatre productions in both Corning and Bath, including as Julie Jordan in Carousel and Maria in The Sound of Music. She also sang at weddings and funerals. Lois was an avid knitter and quilter. Her lovingly knit sweaters, afghans and quilts are useful treasures loved by those who received them as gifts.
