Ronald E. Dull, 77
Ronald E. Dull, 77 of Ashland passed from this life late Thursday evening, April 24, 2025 in Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio with his family at his side.
Ron was born on January 12, 1948 in Lodi, the son of the late Melvin and Connanelle "Connie" (nee Shakley) Dull.
He graduated from Mapleton High School, Class of 1966. Ron proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1969.
Ron married the love of his life, the former Mary Ann Bertschy on March 16, 1985.
He was a member of the Harry Higgins Post 88 of the American Legion for more than 39 years. He served as Post Commander for 17 years and has also held the positions of First Vice Commander, Second Vice Commander and Adjutant. He served as the post historian and Americanism Chairman for several years. He was a member of Post 88 Sons of the American Legion and an honorary member of the American Legion Riders. He was a member of the American Legion honor and color guard until he became disabled. He was named Legionnaire of the Year in 2019 in Ashland. In 2023, he was named Post 88, the Fifth District and the Department of Ohio, Legionnaire of the Year. He was named Post 88 chairman of the year in 1999-2000. He was named Veteran of the Year in 1997 and 2001 from the Veterans of Vietnam War Post 9. A life member of Post 9, he is the secretary and treasurer, a position he has held for many years. He is a life member of Amvets Post 96 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1067, where he is a past assistant quartermaster. He initiated the formation of the Ashland County Joint Veteran's Council in 1990. He has also served many years as the Ashland County Commander of the American Legion. Ron had been in charge of the City of Ashland's Memorial Day parade and program for more than 30 years, stepping down this past year due to health. He initiated the start of the Veterans Day at the Ashland County Fair in 1989 as well as initiating serving cornbread and beans to the veterans.
In 2019, he and his wife were named Ashland County Senior Citizens of the Year. Ron was instrumental in organizing a class breakfast twice a year at a local restaurant for his graduating class from Mapleton. He is also a member of the Mansfield Church of the Open Bible.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mrs. Mary Ann Dull of Ashland; one daughter, Kayla (Derek) Conway of Ashland; three sons from a previous marriage, Mike Dull of Crestline, Matt (Sherie) Dull of Galion, Mark (Mindy) Dull of Ashland; grandchildren, Colton and Alivia Conway of Ashland, Travis Dull, Chelsee (Tyler) Givens, Kimberly, Kaitlynn and Austin Dull; numerous great grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Alexander of Columbus and Sue Bowersock of Ashland; a brother-in-law, John Roger Smith of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Marlene (Ronnie) Miller of Wooster; a former brother-in-law, John Alexander of Columbus; numerous nieces and nephews; and bonus kids, Meghann (Ryan) Beeching and their children, Camden & Peyton and Adam (Bree) Kurtz and their children, Payton, Ryden, Matthias, and Ezra.
In addition to his parents, Ron is preceded in death by a brother, Randy (Linda) Dull; a sister, Linda Smith; a brother-in-law, Robert Bowersock; two nieces, Jessica Skaggs and Tammy Halll; and a grandson, Nicholas Dull.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Jennifer Whitmore presiding. The Ashland Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. Friends and family may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland County Cancer Association or to Cleveland VA Fisher House.
