RONALD ALLEN HAGER
PORTLAND – Dr. Ronald Hager, 88, peacefully passed away with his family at his side in the early hours of October 6, 2025, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Born November 25, 1936, in Euclid, Ohio, he was the eldest son of Florence (née Hopke) and Clarence Hager.
Ron married his college sweetheart, Barbara, in 1958, and together they shared 67 years of marriage, a milestone they celebrated this past August. A lifelong educator, Ron devoted his career to teaching and leadership, serving in administration, working directly with students, and later as a Professor of Education after earning his PhD from Michigan State University in 1971. Known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, he shared his expertise through workshops about the power of laughter, partnering with organizations across the country.
An avid athlete throughout his life, Dr. Hager played college football, enjoyed running, and continued to lift weights well into his later years. After settling in Portland, he remained active in the community by teaching courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and tending to the plants at O'Donal's Nursery. Together, he and Barb transformed their garden into a backyard oasis, thoughtfully adorned with his distinctive sculptures made from found objects.
True to his playful and generous spirit, Ron also delighted in bringing joy as Santa Claus, appearing in the Star City Holiday Parade in Lincoln, Nebraska, and later making appearances at O'Donal's and at several Portland tree-lighting events-experiences his grandchildren cherished.
Ron will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality and genuine curiosity about the world around him. He possessed an exceptional gift for connecting with others, always ready with a story, a laugh, or an insightful remark-a singular, endearing quality that left a lasting impression on his family and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hager; his four sons, Eric (Carol), Martin (Sandra), Lyle, and Dean; his nephews, Terry (Gail) and Jim (Lin); as well as eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Gosnell House for the care and support they provided during Ron's final days. Those who wish may donate in Ron's name to the Good Theatre at Stevens Square in Portland, Maine, Portland Ovations, or Gosnell House in Scarborough.
