Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schellhaas & Sons F.H. & Cremation Svcs., Inc. - Franklin Park on Feb. 11, 2024.
Ronald E. (Ron) Matlack, 79, of Wexford, peacefully at home, on Saturday, February 10.
Ron loved his family fiercely. He was married to his beloved wife Vicki for 54 years and was the treasured father of Kevin (Erin) of Allison Park and Brian (Karen) of
Streetsboro, Ohio. Ron was adored by his grandchildren Kaitlyn (Dom), Dylan, Anthony, Jacob, Josh, Alyssa and Alex, and especially by great-granddaughter Remington. Ron is also survived by his loving sister Nancy (Curtis) Gottschall of Montoursville and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron was gifted in maintaining relationships and friendships throughout his life, organizing his 50th high school reunion and playing cards with the same group of friends for over 20 years.
Raised in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Donald and Naomi Matlack, Ron was an incredibly proud 1967 graduate of Penn State University. He maintained a lifelong connection to the Acacia fraternity and to his fraternity brothers, as well as to Penn State athletics as a season ticket holder for more than 30 years. It was his joy in life to watch both of his sons follow in his footsteps as Penn State alumni, then travel together to cheer on the Nittany Lions as a family.
Ron's college education launched him into a successful and gratifying career in human resources management with Westinghouse and Eaton that took him to Pittsburgh, then to
South Boston, Virginia, and finally back to Pittsburgh. One of Ron's favorite aspects of his career was the opportunity to recruit and mentor, and fittingly, he created the Matlack Family Alumni Career Services Program Endowment at Penn State with his wife, their way of giving back to the university in thanks for all that Penn State afforded their family. Ron was also extremely proud of his country and served for 14 years in the Army Reserve at the 99th ARCOM (now the Regional Support Command) in the medical office as a sergeant.
While Ron counted Penn State as one of his greatest loves in life, after family and faith, he was also a lover of music and Pittsburgh sports, enjoying the ups and downs of the Pittsburgh Penguins (more ups) and Pirates (more downs) as a long-time season ticket holder of both. He loved traveling, especially to the beach, and often would fondly share stories of college summers spent selling popcorn and popsicles in
Ocean City, New Jersey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 15th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Schellhaas & Sons Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 1600 Stone Mansion Drive,
Sewickley, PA 15143 (Franklin Park/Wexford), where a funeral service will be held on Friday, February 16th at 10:00 a.m..
