He attended Freeport High School as a teen and excelled in sports especially basketball.

After high school he joined the Air Force and was a skilled electrician with a focus on repairing radar and other type of location devices for airplanes. His skills took him to sites all over the world such as Alaska, Panama, and Germany.

He continued to play basketball for the Air Force competing with a number of NBA players in summer leagues in places such as Panama.

During his time in the Air Force his first son Gordon (Gordy) Miguel Kirksey was born.
