Ronald Douglas Sowards Jr., age 58, passed away on November 17, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Ronald was born on August 9, 1967, in Princeton Illinois, to Ronald Douglas Sowards Sr. and Sadie Marie Walters Sowards. He graduated from high school and continued his education at Hyles–Anderson College and Tennessee Temple University, completing three years of college before pursuing a career of service to his country.
Ronald proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for 16 years as an Aircraft Electrician, rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant. His dedication, skill, and commitment to excellence were recognized through numerous commendations, including the Air Force Training Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal with one device, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He was medically discharged in 2007 after nearly two decades of honorable service.
Above all, Ronald's greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He loved being outdoors, especially camping and fishing, where he found peace and a sense of connection with nature. He also enjoyed quilting in his free time.
Ronald will be remembered for his dedication, integrity, and the quiet strength he brought to every task and every relationship. His service to his country and the memories he leaves behind will continue to inspire all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jamison Lee Sowards; his daughter, Kaitlynn Marie Sowards; and his parents, Ronald Douglas Sowards Sr. and Sadie Marie Walters Sowards.
He is survived by his sons, Adam Sowards of Dayton, Ohio, and Justin Sowards (Trianna) of Columbus, Indiana; his daughter, Brittnie Sowards of La Porte, Indiana; and his sisters, Carol Loper (Harlan) and Dawn Peters (Raymond), both of Powell, Tennessee. He was deeply cherished by his nephew, Kameron, and niece, Kristina, and will be remembered with love by all who knew him, including his dog, Maggie, his faithful companion.
Family and friends will meet on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, Kentucky, for a 12:00 PM graveside service with Military Honors. The service will be officiated by Steve Mann.
