Ronald VanGundy Obituary

Ronald Joseph "Joe" VanGundy, age 78 of Lancaster, departed this life on October 23rd, 2025, at Fairfield Medical Center. Born on January 12th, 1947, in Oakland, Ohio, Joe was a cherished son of the late Robert Raymond and Edith Elizabeth Shaw VanGundy. He was the embodiment of a true country soul, a steadfast fixture in his community, and a loyal friend whose earthy wisdom and warmth touched all who crossed his path.

After dedicating over four decades of service, Joe hung up his boots at Anchor Hocking, where he made his mark as a furnace room operator. A man of great strength and character, he was not one to shy away from hard work or speak softly; rather, he carried himself with the ornery spirit that endeared him to many. Joe was a father figure to countless young lives, serving as a 30-year 4-H advisor for both the Golden Spurs and Vaqueros clubs, where his passion for horses brought joy and knowledge to many eager hearts. His devotion to these causes illuminated his life, emphasizing the value he placed on family, community, and shared experiences.

His personality was a tapestry of delightful contradictions: a straight shooter, he held forth on life's realities, never hesitating to share his perspective even when it was unwelcome. Joe was one who loved storytelling and had the gift of gab who relished the simplicity of a life rooted in tradition. In an age of ever-changing technology, he remained unlikely to embrace the modern conveniences, instead finding comfort within the frames of old country western films and the rugged charm of John Wayne's timeless roles. He was a past member of both the early Fairfield Christian Church and was a founding member of the Church of God. He was also an avid coon and rabbit hunter, cherishing the companionship of his dogs and holding membership in the Carroll Coon Hunters Club.

Joe's legacy lives on through his beloved children, Teena (Shannon Young) VanGundy, Thomas VanGundy, and Ted VanGundy, who carry forth his values and spirit. His proudest accomplishments were his family, especially his grandchildren—David “Mick”Marvi, Lillian Pugh, Logan (Rachel Cottrill) VanGundy and Makya Marvi serve as living testaments to his enduring love. He also takes watch over his great-grandchild, Justin Lee Pugh “Junior,” along with several nieces, nephews, and many friends who have been fortunate enough to share in his journey.

In eternal rest, Joe joins his beloved wife Anita, his grandson Colton VanGundy, his parents and the many siblings who preceded him in death: Robert Raymond VanGundy Jr., Gene, James, John, and Dolly VanGundy, Kate Hart, Joan, Jerry, “Sis” Elizabeth, and Mac VanGundy.

A fitting farewell will take place at The Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N Columbus St. Lancaster, Oh 43130. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 3rd from 4 PM until 7 PM, followed by a funeral service on Tuesday, November 4th at 10:30 AM. His physical presence may leave us, but Joe's indomitable spirit, his laughter, and heartfelt stories remain etched in the fabric of the lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed—a true country boy at heart, unapologetically himself, and endlessly loyal.   Online condolences can be made at www.funeralhome.com
