Rory Lynn Nelson, Husband, Father, Teacher, Veteran and lifelong learner, passed away at his home in Overton, Nevada on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 56, after his battle with cancer.
He was born on August 31, 1969, in Henderson, Nevada to Rodney Price and Kathleen Kaye Hunter Nelson. He grew up in Moapa Valley and attended Moapa Valley High School, where he was a standout student and actively involved in a wide variety of school activities, and numerous school clubs. He graduated with honors in 1987 and earned his Eagle Scout Award, a reflection of his early commitment to leadership and love for the gospel.
In 1988, Rory answered the call to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salta, Argentina. His time there left a lasting impact on his life, strengthening his faith and love for the gospel.
On October 24, 1998, he married Tracie Lynn Robinson in the Las Vegas LDS Temple. Rory pursued higher education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and later at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He also served ten years in the United States Army as a dedicated combat medic, earning the rank of Sergeant. His service reflected his compassion, discipline and deep sense of duty.
Rory was passionate about teaching and spent his career inspiring young minds as a high school science teacher. He taught at Las Vegas Academy in Las Vegas and later at Green Valley High School in Henderson. His students admired him for his depth of knowledge, engaging teaching style, and genuine care for their success.
Well-read and endlessly curious, Rory was known for his vast knowledge whether in the classroom, among friends, or in church discussions, he was always ready to share insight, ask thoughtful questions, and seek truth.
Survivors include his wife, Tracie; one son and two daughters: Cassandra attending BYU Provo; Mathew and Jessica of Overton; his mother Kathy of Overton; six brothers and three sisters: Jeff (Brandie) of Peoria, AZ; Aaron (Michelle) of Henderson, NV; Aileena Perez of Logandale; Travis (Karen) of Bonaire, GA; Karleena (James) Landini of Logandale; Jared (Maryanne) of Iowa City, IA; Sean (Cara) of Quatar; Tyler (Lindsey) of Las Vegas and Chareena Of Iowa City, IA. Rory was preceded in death by his father, Rod Nelson; his brother, Steve, his brother in law Joe Perez and father in law, Van Robinson.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Moapa Valley Mortuary. Graveside services will be held promptly Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 10:40 a.m. at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial, Boulder City, Nevada.
