Born on March 16, 1935, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Doña Rosa brought with her the warmth and resilience of her island heritage when she made Chicago her home. Over the decades, she became a beloved figure in the city's Puerto Rican community, particularly in Humboldt Park.
In the 1960s, Doña Rosa was the proud owner of Vega Baja restaurant, a cherished establishment that served as both a culinary haven and a cultural gathering place for many in the neighborhood. Her passion for cooking-especially traditional Puerto Rican cuisine-was evident not only in her professional life but also in her personal one. Her dishes were more than meals; they were expressions of love and tradition that nourished generations.
Throughout her life, Doña Rosa worked diligently across various blue-collar jobs before dedicating herself to public service within the Chicago Public Schools system. She served as a School Community Representative (SCR) at both Lowell and Mozart Elementary Schools. In this role, she helped bridge communication between families and schools, offering support and advocacy for students and parents alike. Her commitment to education and community upliftment left a lasting impact on those she worked with.
Doña Rosa was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jose Ramon Hernandez, her daughter Delia Morales, and her son Frank Caraballo.
She is lovingly remembered by Rosa Morales, Carlos M. Rodriguez, Jose A. Rodriguez, Gregory Caraballo Jr., George Caraballo, Annette Hernandez, and over two dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her legacy lives on through those who knew her strength, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family and community. May her memory bring comfort to all who were touched by her life.
