Obituary of Rose A Ortell

Rose A. Ortell

Age 89 of Elmira, NY. She was born May 22, 1936 in Scranton, PA, daughter of the late George and Irene (McCormick) Gilboy, Sr. and passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2025. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Francis J. "Shorty" Ortell, Sr. in 2016; sisters Irene Marie Sheahan, Louise Russell and Anne Barone, brothers John and Paul Gilboy. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary Rose and Gary Shaw of Elmira Heights; son and daughter-in-law Francis Jr. and Michele (Swartz) Ortell of Wellsburg; grandchildren, Allison (William Drew) and Alexander (Spencer) Ortell, Benjamin and Breanna Shaw; brother George Gilboy of FL; along with several nieces and nephews. Rose retired from St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a communicant of Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish attending the former St. Cecilia's Church and Ss. Peter & Paul Church. Family and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, September 2nd at 11 am in St. Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Rose through donations to the Elmira Heights Fire Department, 215 Elmwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY 14903 or the Elmira Animal Shelter, 842 Linden Pl., Elmira, NY 14901
