Roxie Lee Rogers affectionately known as Momma, Mema and Aunt Teenie; was born in Baxley, GA on October 29, 1937 to the late Pastor Hozie & Roxie Fuller Rogers. Roxie was the 7th child of twelve and was predeceased by her siblings Mattie B. Smith, Mary Aleane Smith, Lauretha Thomas, Roy Rogers, Hozie Rogers Jr., Ommie Lois Swan, Jimmy Rogers and Joseph Rogers. Survived by three sisters Rhoda Dumas of Texas, Rev. Helen Thorne of Hamden,CT and Ayatul I. AbdurRahman (Carolynn Patricia Rogers) of Sharjah, UAE. As well as her loving daughters Alisa Rogers, Debora McClure (Joe), Wendy Jennings (Sly), Aricka Sanders and Shelly Tabb. Roxie helped raise two special grandchildren her oldest grand-daughter Tammy Rogers Vaughn and grandson Tevon Burden. Her treasured legacy will be lived through her grandchildren, Jared, Andre' Jr, Justin, Aaron, Hayley, Jaylen, and her last grandchild Elijah. Great grandchildren Detuan, Dejah, Demani, Destiny, Deyannah, Ariana, August and Jackson. One great, great grandson Cameron. Special nieces- Terry, Jomesha, Yvonne, April, Cheryl, Rita and Saipin. Two special nephews-Danny and Kevin.
Roxie left Georgia at the early age to help watch her sister's children here in Norwalk, CT. Being the creative person that she was she made her way by doing hair and baby sitting in her community. Her first job was at Kings Department Store in Stamford, CT. She went on to work at many local grocery stores as a butcher. She also worked many years as a nurse's aide and retired as a DDS worker at the State of Connecticut.
Roxie loved the Lord with her whole heart and served Him mightily. That passion led to the beginning of Solid Rock church in her home, alongside of her sister Rev. Pastor Helen Thorne; which was later pastored by her favorite cousin Bernice Rogers. She later became an ordained ministered under the great Bishop Hollis of Lumber City, GA. Roxie's final position was The Mother of the church at Little Zion COCIG led by her Pastor, David E. Washington. Roxie also served as a missionary by serving meals to the homeless and on many occasions opening up her home to them at Thanksgiving. Everyone knows Aunt Teenie by her amazing ability to cook. To her family she was THE BEST COOK ever. Roxie loved to garden, vacation, fish, sew and crochet. She loved fresh clean sheets and made it known, no one was allowed to sit on her bed. Our mom loved all things domestic; she made sure she swept and mop her floors every night after dinner. Our mom was very also very competitive, whether it was while playing her favorite game of Yahtzee which led her to take an extra roll or two or when she would challenge younger drivers to race her, while driving in her eight-cylinder green Lemans.
A perfect day for our mom would be riding with Toto to pick up the grandkids or long rides to nowhere with Yvonne and Aricka. Any day that included being with family and friends made her the happiest. If our mom caught you complaining about the cares of this world- she would say- hold it- what does the bible say? alright then. And if you were going through a difficult time, she would say- this too shall pass But her ultimate saying was- when I think of the goodness of Jesus and all he's done for me my soul cries out hallelujah, I thank God for saving me.
During her last days our mother's greatest joy was knowing "Aricka is here" and that Toto was on her way to get her. Her favorite questions where- When is Toto coming? What is on our agenda for the day? Who are my parents and did we eat yet? Every morning- she would ask Aricka, how old am I? and I would tell her, her age and she would say Go Roxie!
Our momma was truly the brightest color in our crayon box and the sunshine of our lives she will be greatly missed. Job well done Roxie. We know without a shadow of a doubt you made it in. We love you momma, but like you would always say, you loved us more.
Services will be held Saturday, May 24th, 11:00am at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Rockland Rd. Norwalk, Ct. 06854.
