MOUNTAIN CITY - Roy Dowell, age 83, of Mountain City, TN passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025 at the Waters of Roan Highlands. Roy was born on July 23, 1942 in Johnson County, TN to the late Sherman Dowell and Lizzie Potter Dowell. He was preceded in death by five sisters and six brothers.
Roy went in the Army in 1966 and served until 1968. When he got out of the service he went to work at Blue Ridge Shoe Company where he worked for several years. Then Roy and a friend went into the carpet cleaning business (Wonder Vac) where he was working at Mountain City Manor also. Then he went to Doe Valley Baptist Church to serve as the pastor for 17 years.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 61 years, Ruth Marie Dowell; son, Jeff Dowell and wife Amy; grandsons, Dakota Dowell and wife Izzy, and Austin Dowell; brother, Bill Dowell; special sisters-in-law, Barbara Halstead, Joan Park, and Jean Lester; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Mike Fenner and Ed Porter officiating. The graveside service will follow from Reece Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Austin Dowell, Dakota Dowell, Buck May, Dan Osborne, Hurley Guinn, and Rob Isaacs.
