Roy Charles Icenogle, Indianapolis, passed away at his home on Monday, October 13, 2025, at age 82. Roy was born December 26, 1942, in Davenport, Iowa to Fredrick Emmett and Ruth Mae Icenogle. He graduated from Beardstown High School in Beardstown, Illinois, in 1960 and then earned a bachelor's of science degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois in 1964.
After graduation, Roy enlisted in the Army, beginning a career path that led to the rank of captain in the United States Army Finance Corp. He served in various accounting positions at a variety of postings. His first postings included Ft. Sheridan in Illinois, Vietnam (May 1966–December 1967), and Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois.
In September 1969, Roy attended a 39-week Finance Officer Advanced Course at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, where he met and married Marcia Kay Howard in May 1970. The newly wed couple moved to Washington, DC, where Roy served for three years as a budget officer in the Office of the Controller of the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. Their daughter, Tina, was born in May 1971. In September 1973, Roy was assigned to duty in Korea, leaving Marcia and their young daughter in the home they purchased in Indianapolis. Roy returned from Korea to an assignment at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. He decided to return to civilian life and received an honorable discharge from the Army on November 30,1976.
Roy returned to school, completing his master's degree in business administration (MBA) at Indiana University in May 1978. He then went on to pass his certified public accountant (CPA) exam in 1979.
During his time as a student, starting in 1977, Roy managed the purchase, renovation, rental, and sale of personal residential properties. This was the start of his interest in real estate, which continued for many years.
In 1979, Roy entered the world of Indianapolis local government. He was employed first as assistant controller for the Department of Public Safety and then moved to senior financial budget analyst for the City-County Council of Indianapolis and Marion County. He then became the treasurer/controller of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. In 1992, Roy left local government and politics to return to full-time management of his and Marcia's personal properties. He passed his Indiana Real Estate License Exam and went to work for Carpenter Realtors from 1994–2003.
In 1997, he and Marcia decided that they should go their separate ways. They remained very close friends and always celebrated birthdays, holidays, and family events together with their daughter Tina.
In 2002, Roy went back to work for the government, this time for the IRS, where he stayed until 2009 when he retired at age 67. However, Roy didn't retire to a rocking chair. He continued making improvements to his house and yard-and meticulously mowed his lawn and trimmed his shrubs. He also enjoyed going to antique auctions, visiting car shows, and sometimes drag races with his best friend, Kevin Price, and going to the Indiana casinos. He also continued to be interested in real estate. Every summer, he patiently tended a couple of tomato plants and bell peppers.
During these last years of Roy's life, he experienced several serious health issues-some related to Agent Orange from his service in Vietnam-but he never gave up, keeping up with his many doctor appointments and the drugs the issues required. Roy got up every morning, read the newspaper while he drank his coffee, and tuned in to the news to ensure that he kept up with what was happening in the world, both news and weather-wise. He also continued to mow his own lawn, go to the gym regularly, talk and visit with family and friends, and whenever possible, he liked to make people laugh.
Roy is survived by his wife, Marcia, his sister, Mary White, four nieces and nephews-Derek White, Dana Bohn, Donna White, and Darren White-plus great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Tina Icenogle, and his best friend, Kevin Price.
The family is planning a private Celebration of Life with Roy's close friends, to be scheduled later. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Roy's memory to the
American Cancer Society or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
