Roy began his illustrious career in Fish and Wildlife in Manchester, Iowa, as a Biological Technician (Fisheries) before transferring to Saratoga in 1976. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his tenure with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, enduring until his retirement from government work. Alongside his career in wildlife, Roy and his beloved wife, Trudee Ann Schroeder, operated a restaurant in Saratoga for nine years and briefly worked in real estate, holding a license for a couple of years.

A proud graduate of the public school system in Greene, Iowa, Roy completed his education in May 1952. Roy's faith was an integral part of his life. A lifelong active member of the Lutheran Church, he was baptized on April 29, 1934, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene and was confirmed on March 21, 1948. His dedication to his religious beliefs was evident in all aspects of his life.

Over the years, Roy found great joy in various hobbies and interests. In his youth, he enjoyed sports, cards, picnics, camping, and fishing. In later years, his passion for golf flourished as he participated in the Saratoga Men’s League for many years, showcasing his competitive spirit and love for the game.

Roy's proudest accomplishments include marrying Trudee Hutchinson on May 18, 1968, a union that lasted for 57 cherished years. Together, they raised two daughters, Keri Longdon and Beverly Schroeder, who reside in Laramie, Wyoming. He leaves behind not only his loving wife and daughters but also many nieces and nephews, who will remember him fondly.
