Roy H. Schroeder, born on April 2, 1934, in Greene, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home in Saratoga, Wyoming, on July 30, 2025. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and a dedicated member of his community.
Roy began his illustrious career in Fish and Wildlife in Manchester, Iowa, as a Biological Technician (Fisheries) before transferring to Saratoga in 1976. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his tenure with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, enduring until his retirement from government work. Alongside his career in wildlife, Roy and his beloved wife, Trudee Ann Schroeder, operated a restaurant in Saratoga for nine years and briefly worked in real estate, holding a license for a couple of years.
A proud graduate of the public school system in Greene, Iowa, Roy completed his education in May 1952. Roy attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and later the University of Iowa in Iowa City, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He served his country valiantly as an enlisted member of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. Roy was a member of the 6920th Electronic Security Group stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan, where he served honorably until his discharge in June 1960 as a Staff Sergeant. Throughout his service, he was awarded several medals, including the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal, along with a special medal from the South Korean Government.
Roy's faith was an integral part of his life. A lifelong active member of the Lutheran Church, he was baptized on April 29, 1934, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene and was confirmed on March 21, 1948. His dedication to his religious beliefs was evident in all aspects of his life.
Over the years, Roy found great joy in various hobbies and interests. In his youth, he enjoyed sports, cards, picnics, camping, and fishing. In later years, his passion for golf flourished as he participated in the Saratoga Men’s League for many years, showcasing his competitive spirit and love for the game.
Roy's proudest accomplishments include marrying Trudee Hutchinson on May 18, 1968, a union that lasted for 57 cherished years. Together, they raised two daughters, Keri Longdon and Beverly Schroeder, who reside in Laramie, Wyoming. He leaves behind not only his loving wife and daughters but also many nieces and nephews, who will remember him fondly.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and two sisters: Dale, Carroll, Verna, Howard, Earl, Dwight, Robert (Bob), and Rowena. His legacy of love, dedication, and community service will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held in his honor on August 9, 2025, at Platte Valley Lutheran Church in Saratoga, Wyoming, starting at 2:30 PM, followed by a time of reflection and remembrance.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, Iowa. Interment will take place in Green, Iowa at Rose Hill Cemetery.
