Roy Smith Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Coyle Smith, 76, a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Fishers, Indiana.

Roy was born on March 29, 1949, to Preston Smith and Hazel Leona (Chapin) Smith Larrieu in Indianapolis, IN, and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in May 1968 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in July 1968 until July 1974. Roy served as a Navy Seabee, the Navy’s skilled construction professional and construction force in Vietnam. Roy worked as a construction salesman for Smith Brothers Builders. Later, he worked as a salesman for a variety of companies over the years, selling products ranging from cell phones and pools to windows, vacuums, and roofs throughout his career. He impressed his daughters and their friends by having one of the first “car phones” they had seen.

Roy was well-known for his sense of humor, especially his impressions. He was the life of many parties and loved being surrounded by friends and family. One of his most loved pastimes was fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards, being around great music, and driving, including racing cars at one point as a young adult. He loved watching baseball (especially the Cubs), football (especially the Colts), basketball (especially the Fever and Pacers), and racing (especially the Indy 500). He also enjoyed watching and refereeing his daughter’s sporting events and was very proud of their achievements throughout their life.

Two daughters and two sons-in-law survive Roy, Amanda Daye Smith (Shannon) of Westfield, IN, Natalie Eve Groce (Chris) of New Palestine, IN; grandchildren Amaya Smith, Brady Groce, Phoebe Smith, and Bryce Groce; brothers Ross Smith (Diana) and William Smith (Ann); sister Nancy Smith; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Larrieu, Preston Smith, and Marjorie Smith; brother, P. Kent Smith; sisters, Susie Vermilion, Connie Taylor, Carol Ann Smith, and Linda Sparks, as well as several siblings-in-law.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, with the funeral service starting at 2:00 pm at Indiana Funeral Care at 8151 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250, with a graveside ceremony with military honors at 3:30 pm at Hamilton Memorial Park, 4180 Westfield, IN 46062.
