Roy James Wetherington, 80, of New Bern, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 5th.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, as well as a great friend to so many that loved him dearly. Roy James was born in New Bern, NC on September 16, 1945, and lived in the Clarks community for the majority of his life.
In 1971, he married his wife of 54 years, Betty Daniels Wetherington. Roy was a former scout leader, baseball coach and number one supporter of his kids and grandchildren. He was a devoted member of Gethsemane OFWB Church and Solid Rock Global Methodist Church. Roy’s faith was both significant and unwavering not only in his life, but for his family, friends and fellow church members. He was a member of Woodman of the World, a past master mason with Ionic Lodge #583 and a member of the Solid Rock Men’s Huddle group. Roy was a veteran of the United States Army and a federal employee at Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point for 38 years. In his free time, he was a self-taught woodworker who enjoyed creating unique projects to gift to family and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, John Roy and Elizabeth Riggs Wetherington.
Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty; his children, Lee Gayle Wetherington Tillman (Jay), Julie Wetherington Cox (Leland) and Aaron Roy Wetherington (Sarah); his grandchildren, Joshua Tillman, Anna Grace Cox, Jesse Cox, Kaylyn Wetherington and William Roy Wetherington, along with many special cousins, nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8th at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home, 52 Bryant Street, Grantsboro, NC 28529, with the Rev. Bryan Huffman and the Rev. Calvin Heath officiating. Graveside services will be held at Greenleaf Memorial Park, New Bern. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, and to honor Roy’s wishes, donations may be made to the Building Fund for Solid Rock Global Methodist Church, 3551 Trent Road, New Bern, NC 28562.
