He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, as well as a great friend to so many that loved him dearly. Roy James was born in New Bern, NC on September 16, 1945, and lived in the Clarks community for the majority of his life.

In 1971, he married his wife of 54 years, Betty Daniels Wetherington. Roy was a former scout leader, baseball coach and number one supporter of his kids and grandchildren. He was a devoted member of Gethsemane OFWB Church and Solid Rock Global Methodist Church. Roy was a veteran of the United States Army and a federal employee at Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point for 38 years. In his free time, he was a self-taught woodworker who enjoyed creating unique projects to gift to family and friends.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, John Roy and Elizabeth Riggs Wetherington.

Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty; his children, Lee Gayle Wetherington Tillman (Jay), Julie Wetherington Cox (Leland) and Aaron Roy Wetherington (Sarah); his grandchildren, Joshua Tillman, Anna Grace Cox, Jesse Cox, Kaylyn Wetherington and William Roy Wetherington, along with many special cousins, nieces and nephews.
